Practical steps for selling a car with a wet interior in South Africa: when to repair, documentation, legal points, and how nationwide buyers handle towing and paperwork.
Assess Repair vs Sell
Compare repair costs to market value before deciding to fix or sell.
Document & Disclose
Photos, repair receipts and honest descriptions lead to quicker, fair offers.
Nationwide, Paperwork Help
Sell options often include free towing and deregistration across South Africa.
A wet interior - whether from a leaking sunroof, blocked drainage, a broken window seal, a spill or partial flood exposure - affects a car’s value, safety and saleability. Water intrusion can cause mould, electrical faults, corrosion and lingering smells, and those issues influence what private buyers, trade buyers and salvage purchasers will pay. This guide explains when to repair versus sell, how offers are assessed in South Africa, and practical steps to get a transparent, competitive cash offer.
Deciding whether to repair a wet interior or sell as-is depends on repair cost, vehicle market value, time and risk. Small leaks or recent spills often make repair worthwhile; extensive water ingress, visible mould, or electronic issues often push the balance toward selling. Use this checklist to evaluate:
| Issue | Estimated repair cost (R) | Typical value retained after repair |
|---|---|---|
| Minor leak, carpets dried & deodorised | R800 - R3,000 | 70-90% of pre-issue market value |
| Seat upholstery & carpet replacement | R3,000 - R12,000 | 60-85% depending on vehicle age |
| Electrics/ECU or structural corrosion after prolonged water | R8,000 - R40,000+ | Often less than 60%; may be written-off by insurers |
These ranges are illustrative and will vary by make, model and exact condition. If repair costs approach or exceed the vehicle’s resale value, selling as-is (to a buyer who accepts water-affected cars) can be quicker and lower risk.
Good documentation improves trust and helps valuation. Before contacting buyers, take clear photos of affected areas (carpets, seat bases, boot, dashboard, trunk drains) and short videos showing any electrical faults. Note when the water was first noticed and what steps you’ve taken (drying, professional cleaning). If you’re unsure whether the vehicle is non-running due to water damage, note symptoms (stuttering, warning lights) - this information speeds up an accurate offer.
If your vehicle isn’t running after water exposure, consider the streamlined online valuations that buy damaged or non-running cars nationwide. For process details and common buyer inclusions, see our About / How it works page and the dedicated Sell Non-Running Car page for non-starters.
A reliable buyer who purchases vehicles in any condition will typically follow these steps: you upload vehicle details and images, they return an initial offer, you accept if it’s suitable, they handle paperwork and arrange free towing, and payment is released after collection. This removes the logistics of arranging transport and reduces the time your car remains exposed to worsening conditions.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offers |
|---|---|
| Isolated wet spot / recent spill | Minor reduction; repairable with cleaning |
| Prolonged interior moisture, mould | Moderate reduction; requires deep cleaning or replacement |
| Flood exposure / engine or ECU affected | Significant reduction; may be treated as salvage/written-off |
When selling in South Africa, you and the buyer must complete the necessary ownership transfer documentation. If a vehicle is written-off or declared salvage by an insurer, that status should be disclosed. Vehicles under finance must usually have the outstanding balance cleared or a settlement arrangement agreed before transfer; inform your lender early to avoid delays. Buyers who purchase for parts or salvage often handle deregistration and admin - confirm which party is responsible in writing.
For sellers who prefer a simple option, dealers that buy damaged or non-running cars typically include deregistration as part of their service and provide free nationwide towing from metros such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban and surrounding areas. For more on selling damaged vehicles and accepted conditions see the Sell Damaged Cars page and our homepage for nationwide coverage details.
Once you accept an offer, the buyer typically completes paperwork (including a transfer form and proof of payment), arranges free towing and processes payment - many buyers release near-instant payment after collection and verification. Keep copies of signed transfer forms and confirmation of payment. If the buyer will deregister the vehicle or scrap it, request written confirmation of those steps for your records.
