Learn how deployed airbags affect value, legal steps, repair vs sell decisions and practical tips for selling a car with an airbag deployed in South Africa.
Understand Value Impact
Deployed airbags often increase repair costs and affect resale and salvage classification.
Prepare Documentation
Photos, service history and ownership papers help secure clear, faster offers.
Nationwide, Paperwork Help
Specialist buyers often provide free towing, deregistration and fast payment.
If the airbag in your car has deployed after an accident, you are not alone - deployed airbags are common after collisions and they change a vehicle's repair needs and market perception. This guide explains what "airbag deployed" means for value and safety, the documentation buyers typically ask for in South Africa, and practical steps to prepare the car for sale. Throughout, we use South Africa-specific notes (for example: free nationwide towing and deregistration options) and realistic cost ranges in R as estimates only.
A deployed airbag indicates the vehicle has been in an impact significant enough to trigger the restraint system. Repairs usually involve replacing airbags, sensors, steering-column components and possibly bodywork or electronics. Buyers - private, trade or salvage - will factor these repair needs and potential hidden damage into an offer. For many owners, selling may be quicker and lower-risk than funding extensive repairs.
| Repair scenario | Typical repair cost (R, estimate) | Approx. value retained after repair |
|---|---|---|
| Minor deployment - airbag only, no structural damage | R8,000 - R20,000 | 60%-80% of pre-accident market value (estimate) |
| Moderate - airbags, sensors, some panel repairs | R20,000 - R60,000 | 40%-70% of pre-accident market value (estimate) |
| Major - multiple airbags, structural or engine damage | R60,000+ | Often well below 50% - may be classed as salvage |
These ranges are illustrative and depend on make, model and age. Independent repair quotes from certified workshops in Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban will give the most accurate local figures. If you prefer to avoid repair uncertainty, a direct sale to a specialist buyer that handles salvage and paperwork can be faster. Learn more about options for non-running cars on the Sell Non-Running Car page.
If you want an overview of what we buy and how we operate when a car is damaged, our Sell Damaged Cars page explains common scenarios and inclusions such as free towing and paperwork handling.
Deciding whether to repair or sell depends on repair cost, replacement part availability, insurance position and how soon you need cash or a working car. Repair may make sense if the insurer covers most costs or if a certified repair restores value above repair expense. Selling is often preferable when repair exceeds a large share of market value, the vehicle is undertined by latent damage, or you want to avoid logistics and prolonged downtime.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offers |
|---|---|
| Airbag deployed only (cosmetic integrity intact) | Moderate reduction; repairable components drive cost. |
| Airbag + structural/frame damage | Significant reduction; may be treated as salvage. |
| Airbag + engine/electrical damage | High impact; complex repairs increase costs and lower offers. |
For a simple explanation of our service model and what to expect during collection and paperwork handling, see our About / How it works page. If your car no longer runs after the collision, the Sell Non-Running Car resource explains the process for non-starters and tow-only collections.
Key legal steps include transferring ownership, handling deregistration (if required) and confirming if the vehicle is encumbered by finance. If the vehicle is still under finance, inform the finance house - settlement or transfer instructions must be followed before finalising ownership change. Reputable buyers will help coordinate the payout to the lender and complete transfer documents. Always request written receipts and proof of payment when the sale is concluded.
After you accept an offer and the vehicle is collected, the buyer typically completes transfer forms, assists with deregistration where needed, and pays you according to the agreed terms. Payment timelines vary but many specialist buyers provide near-instant payment verification after collection. Always confirm the payment method and obtain written confirmation of transfer and payment for your records.
Example 1: A private owner in Durban has a small hatchback with the driver airbag deployed and no structural damage. Repair quotes from local workshops show R12,000 in parts and labour. The owner compares repair vs sell options and chooses a specialist buyer who offers free towing and handles deregistration to avoid arranging repairs.
Example 2: A fleet manager near Johannesburg has a light commercial vehicle with multiple airbags deployed and bent chassis rails. The repair estimate exceeds a practical threshold for the business; selling to a buyer who pays cash, collects the vehicle and handles outstanding finance settlement simplifies fleet turnover.
If you want a fast, transparent way to convert a vehicle with deployed airbags into cash while avoiding towing and paperwork hassle, review buyer options that include free nationwide collection, handling of deregistration and transparent offers. Use clear photos and documentation to improve responses and compare offers from reputable buyers across South Africa.
