Practical guide for selling a financed vehicle in Bloemfontein. Learn how settlement figures work, paperwork steps in SA, and how payout is distributed after bond clearance.
Understand Settlement Figures
Get an official lender settlement in writing before you agree a sale.
Payouts After Bond Clearance
Lender is paid first; any surplus is released to the seller after deregistration.
We Help with Paperwork
Using a buyer who manages settlement, transfer and free towing speeds the process.
Selling a car that is still on finance requires extra steps compared with a fully owned vehicle. This guide explains how settlement figures are calculated, what documents lenders require, and how payout is handled when you choose a professional buyer in Bloemfontein. Whether the vehicle is accident-damaged, non-running, or simply under bond, understanding settlement and payout helps you avoid delays and unexpected costs.
If repair costs, running costs or safety concerns exceed the likely post-sale proceeds, selling while the car is on finance can be the most practical option. This is especially true for written-off or non-running vehicles that attract lower trade or private-sale interest. A professional buyer who handles settlement and paperwork can simplify the process in Bloemfontein and surrounding Free State areas.
SA note: Lenders require exact settlement figures (often valid for a specific number of days). Expect a short turnaround between requesting a settlement figure and completing payment to finalise the debt. Always request the figure in writing from your lender.
| Repair cost (estimate) | Typical value retained after sale | When selling on finance makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| R5,000 - R20,000 | 70%-95% of market value | Minor repairs; consider repair if positive equity after settlement |
| R20,000 - R60,000 | 40%-70% of market value | Significant damage; selling often preferable |
| > R60,000 | Below 40% of market value | Usually better to sell and settle finance than to fund major repairs |
These figures are illustrative and based on typical market behaviour in South Africa. Repair costs and retained value vary by make, model, year, and local demand in Bloemfontein.
For an overview of our service model and how we manage paperwork and collection, see our About / How it works page which explains buyer-side administrative steps.
If your car is non-running or damaged, our Sell Non-Running Car and Sell Damaged Cars pages describe condition assessments that influence offers.
When a vehicle is financed, the bank or finance company usually remains the registered owner (or has a registered bond). To complete a legal sale you must obtain a settlement figure and ensure the bond is removed from the vehicle register. In South Africa, the Electronic National Administration Traffic Information System (eNaTIS) and your lender handle registration updates; buyers who offer to manage deregistration and transfer save you time and reduce admin risk.
| Finance status | Typical steps | Impact on payout timing |
|---|---|---|
| In positive equity | Buyer pays lender; surplus released to seller | Payout usually same-day to few days after bond clearance |
| Zero or negative equity | Seller may need to top up shortfall or negotiate with lender/buyer | Payout delayed until shortfall settled or alternative arrangement made |
| Written-off or salvage | Lender requires full settlement; insurer processes total loss first if claim exists | Timing depends on insurer and lender coordination |
Example A - Positive equity: outstanding balance R80,000; buyer pays lender R80,000 and offers R20,000 above that. After bond clearance and transfer, seller receives the R20,000 surplus. Example B - Negative equity: outstanding R120,000 but expected sale value R100,000; seller must arrange R20,000 to settle the lender or negotiate a reduced payout. These are illustrative scenarios; exact figures depend on lender statements and buyer arrangement.
Once the buyer pays the lender and the bond is lifted, transfer of ownership and deregistration steps proceed. Buyers who handle paperwork will typically provide you with proof of bond release and a receipt showing how the settlement was applied. In many cases you will receive any remaining cash balance shortly after the lender confirms clearance. For vehicles with insurers involved (total loss), insurer timelines can affect when funds are released.
For a summary of how we manage collections and admin nationwide - including free towing from Bloemfontein and surrounding areas - see our homepage. Working with a buyer that handles collection and paperwork reduces mistakes and speeds up payout.
Notes: monetary examples shown as R are estimates to illustrate possible outcomes and are not guaranteed. Settlement figures, penalties and transfer timelines vary by lender and individual circumstances. For tailored figures, request an official settlement statement from your finance provider in Bloemfontein.
