Learn how to sell your car after an accident-even with finance owed. See the step-by-step process, paperwork, and how specialist services handle settlement and paperwork in South Africa.
If you're facing a major repair bill after an accident, and your car's still under finance, you're not alone. Many South African car owners find themselves in this position, feeling stuck between insurance, bank settlements, and the challenge of moving on. The big question: can you sell a damaged or written-off car that still has money owing?
The good news is yes-selling is possible, but there are extra considerations. You need to settle the outstanding finance before full ownership transfers. Services like Sell Your Damaged Car specialise in buying accident-damaged vehicles, including those still under finance, and can help you through the payout and paperwork process so you're not left in limbo.
| Scenario | Typical Repair Cost (R) | Estimated Value After Repair (R) | Net Loss / Gain (R) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moderate Damage, Still Financed | 40,000 | 90,000 | -10,000 (plus time/risk) |
| Major Damage, Finance Owing | 100,000+ | 85,000 | -15,000+ |
| Sell As-Is via Salvage Buyer | 0 | Cash Offer (to settle finance) | Immediate settlement |
Numbers shown are for illustration only-your exact figures may vary depending on your vehicle and damages. Always compare repair costs to the settlement and projected sale price.
Selling a vehicle with finance owing requires more legal steps than a regular sale. The main points include:
It's important to only use trusted buyers with experience in settlement and salvage vehicle purchases to avoid risk of being scammed or left liable for ongoing finance.
| Damage Type | Typical Impact on Offer |
|---|---|
| Body Accident Damage | Moderate reduction; depends on extent and parts affected |
| Write-off Status | Significant reduction; may only have salvage value |
| Mechanical Failure Post-Accident | Reduction varies; transparency increases trust and improves offer |
| Outstanding Finance Amount | Impacts net proceeds; settlement comes first |
Once your car is collected, the specialist buyer finalises paperwork with your bank and the licensing authorities. You're freed from future payments and liabilities. If there's any amount above the settlement, it is paid to you once the bank confirms receipt.
Sipho in Johannesburg had a car written off after an accident, with R30,000 still owing. By getting a cash offer from Sell Your Damaged Car, the company settled the R30,000 directly with the bank and managed all paperwork, so he faced no further credit strain or admin hassle.
