Want to sell your BMW with petrol engine issues? Get a transparent quote, free collection, and quick payment anywhere in South Africa.
BMWs are known for their performance and longevity. However, once a petrol engine develops serious faults-such as timing chain failure, oil leaks, or cylinder head problems-repair bills can easily outweigh the vehicle's value, especially for older or high-mileage models. In these cases, selling your BMW as-is through a specialist car-buying service like Sell Your Damaged Car can be the most practical, time-saving solution.
Whether your BMW won't start, runs poorly, or has been written off by insurers, you have options beyond expensive repairs or low-ball offers from private buyers.
Not all engine problems are worth fixing. It's important to compare likely repair costs against your BMW's post-repair market value-especially for models over five years old or with prior accident damage.
| BMW Model | Typical Engine Issue | Est. Repair Cost (R) | % Value Retained After Repair |
|---|---|---|---|
| F30 320i (N20) | Timing chain replacement | R22,000 - R40,000 | 50-65% |
| E90 325i | Vanos failure | R15,000 - R28,000 | 55-70% |
| F20 116i | Turbocharger replacement | R18,000 - R32,000 | 60-72% |
These figures are general estimates-final numbers depend on parts, labour rates, and if other systems have been affected.
If you decide to sell your BMW with petrol engine problems, the process is straightforward:
If your BMW is still financed or has been written-off by your insurer, reach out for advice on ensuring a smooth sale-our team is experienced in these cases.
| Engine Fault Type | Typical Impact on Resale Offer |
|---|---|
| Minor (coil failure, sensor issue) | Small to moderate reduction |
| Major (timing chain, head gasket, turbo) | Significant reduction |
| Complete non-runner/engine seized | Largest impact-valued for salvage/parts |
Providing a clear, honest assessment and detailed photos usually helps you secure the most accurate offer up-front.
Once your BMW is collected, our admin team ensures all paperwork is lodged correctly, including ownership change and deregistration where necessary. Payment is verified same-day. The vehicle is redirected either for salvage, responsible recycling, or parts recovery in line with industry standards.
