Step-by-step guidance for South African owners who want to sell a non-running car: decide repair vs sell, understand paperwork, and learn how online valuation and free towing work.
When to Sell vs Repair
If repair costs outweigh value, selling a non-running car often saves time and money.
Fast, Hassle-Reduced Process
Online valuation, free towing and paperwork assistance speed up sale completion.
SA-Specific Paperwork Notes
Check finance status and follow correct transfer or deregistration steps in South Africa.
If you need to sell a non-running car in South Africa, you have options beyond long private-sale listings or costly repairs. This guide explains when selling is the sensible choice, how a specialist service buys non-starters and written-off vehicles, and what to expect from valuation to collection. Where helpful, we link to our practical resources so you can start the process online.
Deciding whether to repair or to sell a non-running car depends on expected repair costs, the vehicle’s pre-damage market value, time and effort to manage repairs, and whether the car is financed. For many South African owners-especially with older models or significant mechanical failure-selling to a specialist can be faster and lower risk than commissioning repairs.
| Scenario | Typical repair cost (R, estimate) | Estimated value retained after repair |
|---|---|---|
| Minor mechanical (starter/mains battery) | R1,500 - R6,000 | High (70-90%) |
| Major engine or transmission | R15,000 - R60,000 (wide range) | Variable (30-70%) |
| Written-off / severe mechanical failure | Often exceeds market value | Low (10-40%) |
These figures are illustrative and depend on make, model, year and parts availability in South Africa. Repair costs are shown in R and should be treated as broad estimates rather than firm quotes.
A specialist buyer simplifies selling a non-running car: you submit details and photos, receive an offer based on condition and salvage demand, accept if it meets your needs, then the company arranges towing and handles paperwork. Many owners in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and surrounding areas find this faster than listing and negotiating privately.
To begin, many owners use our quick form on the Sell Non-Running Car page for a tailored offer. If the car has accident damage as well as mechanical issues, the Sell Damaged Cars resource explains how that affects valuation.
Selling a non-running car in South Africa requires attention to transfer, finance status and, in some cases, deregistration. If the vehicle is still under finance, most buyers require written consent from the lender or a settlement arrangement. For written-off or salvage vehicles, correct documentation protects both seller and buyer and avoids problems with future liabilities.
| Damage type | How it typically affects offers |
|---|---|
| Mechanical (non-running due to engine/transmission) | Lower offers because repair costs and salvage demand influence valuation. |
| Accident damage (structural) | Significant impact if structural; cosmetic damage has less effect. |
| Flood or fire damage | Offers typically lower due to electrical and corrosion risks. |
Offers vary by model, year, mileage and local salvage market demand in South Africa. Specialist buyers will explain how each factor influenced your quoted offer.
After you accept an offer and the vehicle is collected, the buyer typically finalises paperwork and releases payment. Timeframes vary, but many specialist services in South Africa aim for prompt payment once ownership transfer or deregistration steps are complete.
If you want to learn more about how our process works in detail, visit our About / How it works page. To start immediately with a quick valuation or to upload your vehicle details, go to our homepage.
A Johannesburg owner with a five-year-old hatchback that won’t start may find repair costs approach or exceed local market value when factoring parts and labour. Selling the non-running car to a specialist removes towing hassles, avoids arranging repair estimates and provides a clear transfer of ownership - particularly attractive if the car is used for daily transport and time without a vehicle is costly.
Notes: monetary examples are shown in R and are estimates only. Actual repair costs and offers will vary based on make, model, year and local parts availability in South Africa. For a quick valuation specific to your vehicle, use the Sell Non-Running Car form linked above.
