Learn what determines scrap-for-cash offers in South Africa, how the process works, legal paperwork, and tips to improve your valuation when scrapping a damaged or non-running vehicle.
How Scrap Prices Are Calculated
Offers reflect parts value, metal content and local demand.

Maximise Your Offer
Provide clear photos, documents and accessibility for collection.
Scrapping a vehicle for cash is a common option for cars that are accident-damaged, non-running, flood-affected or written off. This pricing guide explains how scrap values are determined in South Africa, what influences offers, and the choices owners face when deciding whether to repair, sell privately or scrap. Where numbers are referenced they are illustrative estimates and subject to vehicle-specific inspection and local salvage demand; all monetary examples use R to show South Africa context.
Deciding whether to repair or scrap depends on repair cost, remaining market value after repair, the vehicle's age and condition, and how quickly you need a solution. Repair can make sense if the cost is substantially lower than the vehicle's post-repair market value and you intend to keep or sell it as a roadworthy car. Scrapping or selling to a specialist is often better when repair costs approach or exceed realistic market value, or when the car is non-running and the logistics of repair are impractical.
| Repair cost estimate | Typical impact on retained value |
|---|---|
| Minor repairs (cosmetic, R estimates vary) | High retained value; repairs usually justified if clean history |
| Moderate repairs (structural or mechanical components) | Reduced retained value; salvage history may reduce resale price |
| Extensive repairs (serious structural/flood/fire) | Low retained value; scrapping or parting out often preferable |
Note: repair quotes and retained-value estimates vary widely by make, age, and local demand for parts. Always get a written repair estimate and compare it to the likely market outcome if the vehicle is repaired or sold as salvage.
Most specialists calculate offers using three core inputs: the vehicle's salvageable components, the vehicle's usable weight or metal value, and local demand for specific parts. Operational costs such as towing, administration and deregistration affect final offers but many reputable services include free towing and handle paperwork for you.
If you want to see how a specialist presents this workflow in detail, review our process overview on the About page About / How it works and consider the option for non-running vehicles via our Sell Non-Running Car page Sell Non-Running Car.
| Damage type | How it affects scrap offers |
|---|---|
| Cosmetic/bodywork only | Offers remain relatively strong if mechanicals intact and parts are reusable |
| Mechanical failure (non-running) | Lower offers; salvageable parts and metal value still contribute |
| Flood or fire damage | Significant reduction in parts value; often best for scrap/parts market |
| Written-off/structural damage | Offers generally reflect dismantling value and metal; varies by model demand |
When you sell a vehicle in South Africa, clear and accurate paperwork matters. Reputable buyers will handle transfer-of-ownership forms, assist with deregistration where required, and request a stamped letter of sale or receipt. If the vehicle is under finance, settle or obtain lender consent before transfer; some buyers will work with financiers to close accounts but this must be agreed in writing. For guidance on the buyer’s responsibilities and process, see our Sell Damaged Cars page Sell Damaged Cars.
After collection, the buyer typically inspects the vehicle to confirm condition. Payment terms vary but many buyers release payment promptly after verification. The buyer should complete transfer paperwork and provide you with written confirmation of sale and payment details. For a clear, straightforward online start to the process visit our homepage Sell Your Damaged Car to upload vehicle details and photos.
In South Africa, offers reflect local demand for parts and scrap metal, transport costs across cities such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, and the specific condition of the vehicle. For private owners and fleet managers alike, weighing repair estimates against likely scrap or salvage outcomes - and factoring in downtime and admin - will point to the most cost-effective choice. For more operational detail on selling non-running or damaged vehicles, our process pages provide stepwise guidance and answers to frequent questions: About / How it works and Sell Non-Running Car.
