Explore practical options for selling a scrap or written-off vehicle in Pretoria. Learn how offers are set, paperwork to expect and tips to improve your net proceeds.
Local Selling Routes
Options include scrapyards, salvage buyers, parting out or insurer settlement.
Paperwork & Deregistration
Secure receipts and confirm who completes ownership transfer and deregistration.
Maximising Net Return
Compare offers, include towing/admin costs and provide clear photos and VIN details.
If your vehicle is written off, non-running, or only worth scrap, Pretoria owners have several routes: local scrapyards, specialised salvage buyers, dismantlers who part out components, insurer settlements and licensed recyclers. Each option affects net proceeds, convenience and the paperwork you must complete. This guide explains practical selling options specific to Pretoria and the surrounding Tshwane region, with South African legal and administrative notes.
Scrap values combine the core vehicle value (make, model, age), value of reusable parts, and the recyclable metal value (often paid per kilogram). Location matters: Pretoria scrapyards and dismantlers may pay differently from Cape Town or Johannesburg due to local demand and transport costs. Specialist buyers also price in tow and admin costs; many services include free towing and paperwork handling which can simplify the process for owners in Tshwane.
| Situation | Estimated repair cost (R) | Typical value retained after repair (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Major structural/airbag repairs | R25,000 - R70,000 (estimate) | 20-50% |
| Engine or transmission rebuild | R15,000 - R45,000 (estimate) | 40-70% |
| Cosmetic and minor bodywork | R3,000 - R15,000 (estimate) | 70-90% |
Notes: Figures are illustrative South Africa estimates and vary by vehicle age, make, parts availability and labour rates in Pretoria. When repair cost approaches or exceeds the post-repair market value, selling for scrap or to a salvage specialist is often the more practical choice.
For owners unsure whether to repair or sell, an obligation-free valuation from a specialist buyer can clarify whether repair investment is justified. See an example process explanation on our How it works page.
| Damage type | Typical effect on offers |
|---|---|
| Totalled / structural damage | Lower offers; value mainly for parts and scrap metal. |
| Engine failure (non-running) | Offers vary; salvage demand for engines can raise value if restorable. |
| Flood or fire damage | Significantly reduced due to corrosion/electrical risk; better for dismantlers. |
If you want a quick valuation tailored to non-running or damaged vehicles, consider a specialist service listed on the Sell Non-Running Car page.
Decide to sell when repair cost plus downtime exceeds likely resale value, or when safety/legal compliance after repair is uncertain. Fleet managers in Pretoria may prefer fast disposal to avoid continued holding costs. Private owners should factor in time, repair risk and registration implications.
Typical steps when selling to a salvage buyer or professional service:
For an example of a streamlined, nationwide flow that covers valuation, towing and paperwork, read the service overview on the homepage and the Sell Damaged Cars page for specifics.
Paperwork can vary by scenario, but common requirements include the vehicle registration document (logbook), a copy of the seller's ID, and written proof of ownership or finance clearance. If the vehicle is under finance, the financier will usually need to be paid out or grant consent before ownership transfers. Local licensing authorities in Tshwane process ownership changes and removals from the register; sellers should ensure the buyer completes the transfer or deregistration to avoid future liability.
When selling for scrap, insist on a written receipt and a clear transfer of ownership record. Specialist buyers often handle deregistration on your behalf; verify what they will submit and retain copies for your records.
After the vehicle is collected, the buyer will typically process ownership transfer or deregistration and then dismantle, recycle or wholesale the vehicle depending on its condition. Expect payment timelines to depend on the agreed terms - many reputable buyers release payment promptly after collection and paperwork verification. Keep copies of the signed transfer or a receipt that clearly records the transaction.
Example: a 2010 sedan with a seized engine and moderate body damage. Repair estimate R22,000; market value after repair estimated at R28,000. Given labour, parts sourcing and resale uncertainty, a seller in Pretoria may find a salvage sale with free towing and admin handling to be a lower-effort, lower-risk option. Always compare net offers after any fees and confirm who handles transfer and deregistration.
If you need tailored comparisons for Pretoria, collect multiple condition-based offers, confirm who handles towing and deregistration, and prioritise buyers who provide written receipts and clear transfer documentation.
