Understand the scrap car quote process step-by-step in South Africa: online valuation, offer factors, paperwork, free towing and what to expect after collection.
Step-by-step Process
Submit details, get an indicative quote, accept, then free collection and payment.
What Affects Your Quote
Condition, damage type, parts salvageability and finance status shape offers.
SA-Specific Paperwork
Weigh finance settlement, ID and deregistration steps in South Africa.
If you own a damaged, non-running or written-off vehicle and are exploring the scrap car quote process step-by-step, this guide explains what to expect in South Africa. The process reduces time, removes towing headaches and clarifies paperwork: you submit vehicle details and photos, receive a transparent offer, accept if suitable, and the buyer arranges collection and payment. Examples below use R to denote South African rand and any price ranges are estimates dependent on vehicle data and market demand.
This article is aimed at private owners and small-fleet managers in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and surrounding regions who want to understand each step of selling a scrap or damaged vehicle. It explains how offers are made, what paperwork is involved, and practical tips to improve the quote you receive.
Submit details and photos online, get an immediate indicative quote, accept an obligation-free offer, schedule free towing and complete the paperwork for payment and deregistration.
Deciding whether to repair or sell for scrap often depends on repair cost relative to the vehicle’s market value. Below table illustrates typical scenarios - figures are indicative and will vary by vehicle and region.
| Scenario | Typical repair cost (estimate) | Value retained after repair |
|---|---|---|
| Minor cosmetic damage | R3,000-R15,000 | High (70-90% of pre-damage market value) |
| Structural/airbag deployment | R25,000-R100,000+ | Low (30-60%) |
| Major mechanical failure/non-running | R10,000-R70,000 | Variable - often better to sell as scrap |
If repair costs approach or exceed expected resale value, the scrap option typically becomes more economical. For specific valuation comparisons, visit the company overview for how offers are calculated on the Sell Your Damaged Car site About / How it works.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offer |
|---|---|
| Cosmetic dents/scratches | Small reduction - parts salvageable |
| Frame/structural damage | Significant reduction - affects repair cost and resale |
| Flood or fire damage | Large reduction - many components condemned |
| Non-running (mechanical) | Moderate reduction - depends on parts value |
For more detail on selling non-running vehicles, see the Sell Non-Running Car resource, which walks through common scenarios and documentation Sell Non-Running Car.
Below is a typical end-to-end sequence used by reputable cash-for-cars buyers in South Africa. Timing estimates assume acceptance of an offer and availability of documents.
For an outline of the full service and nationwide coverage, the Sell Damaged Cars page explains inclusions such as free towing and admin handling Sell Damaged Cars. The company homepage summarises the online valuation flow and speed of payment Sell Your Damaged Car home.
Key legal points to check before completing a sale:
After the vehicle is collected, the buyer completes a final inspection. If condition matches the description, payment is processed and documentation for deregistration or transfer is finalised. If the vehicle is under finance, the buyer typically coordinates settlement with the financial institution before releasing residual funds to the seller.
Quotes are influenced by local demand for parts, scrap metal prices and salvageability. Expect a range rather than a single fixed number until your vehicle is inspected. Prices quoted online are generally indicative and may be adjusted after physical collection if undisclosed damage is found.
This guide described the scrap car quote process step-by-step with South Africa-specific notes. Use the linked resources above to review service inclusions and to prepare documentation before submitting vehicle details for an accurate, timely quote.
