Learn the factors that determine scrap car pricing for non-running vehicles in South Africa, how offers are calculated, legal steps and tips to maximise value.
What Affects Scrap Value
Parts demand, damage extent, vehicle weight and logistics all shape offers.
Repair vs Sell Decision
If repairs approach market value, selling as scrap or to a specialist is often preferable.
Paperwork & Collection
Nationwide free towing and deregistration assistance reduce seller risk and hassle.
Owners of non-running vehicles frequently ask how scrap car pricing is calculated and what they can reasonably expect when selling a non-runner in South Africa. Scrap pricing depends on vehicle condition, usable parts, weight (for metal value), demand for specific models, and the cost and logistics of collection. For fleet managers, private owners and small workshops in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and surrounding areas, understanding these factors helps choose between repairing, selling for parts, or selling to a specialist buyer.
Note: Estimates below are illustrative for South Africa and shown in R. Actual prices vary by region, market demand and vehicle specifics. For a quick valuation, consider uploading photos and details through our online process at the homepage.
| Scenario | Typical repair cost (R, estimate) | Value retained if repaired (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Minor mechanical (starter alternator) | R2 000 - R8 000 | High - repair often worth it |
| Major engine or gearbox rebuild | R15 000 - R60 000+ | Low - repair may exceed retained value |
| Collision structural repair | R20 000 - R100 000+ | Variable - depends on market and age |
When repair costs approach or exceed the vehicle’s market value (after repair), many owners opt to sell as scrap or to a specialist who buys non-runners. For guidance specific to non-running cars, see our Sell Non-Running Car resource.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offer |
|---|---|
| Mechanical failure (non-starter) | Moderate reduction - parts like engines/gearboxes still have value. |
| Accident/structural damage | Higher reduction - structural repairs are costly and lower resale value. |
| Flood or fire damage | Significant reduction - electrical and interior components often ruined. |
| Intact body but non-running | Less reduction - strong parts demand can lift offers. |
Buyers calculate offers by combining the value of reusable parts, estimated metal scrap value, and subtracting towing and admin costs. Specialist buyers-like salvage yards and companies that buy non-runners nationwide-also consider how quickly they can resell parts. For owners wanting a transparent approach to paperwork and collection, learn more about how the process works on our About / How it works page.
Deciding whether to repair or sell a non-runner depends on repair cost estimates, the vehicle’s pre-damage market value, and time. If a repair exceeds a significant portion of the estimated post-repair market value, selling to a scrap buyer or specialist often yields a faster, lower-risk outcome. Fleet owners should factor in downtime costs and administrative overhead when evaluating options.
Sell Your Damaged Car follows an online-first workflow: upload vehicle data, receive an offer, accept if suitable, and the buyer arranges free towing and handles admin. For practical steps on selling damaged vehicles more broadly, see our Sell Damaged Cars page.
Key legal steps when selling a non-runner include signing a sale agreement, handing over the registration paperwork, and arranging deregistration or transfer. If the vehicle is still under finance, inform the lender-settlement or transfer procedures will affect final payment. Reputable buyers commonly assist with deregistration and ensure the vehicle is removed from your name to reduce ongoing liability.
After collection, the buyer typically inspects the vehicle, processes the paperwork, and arranges disposition-either dismantling for parts or sending the shell for scrap recycling. Payment is usually released once ownership transfer is processed; specialist buyers aim for fast payment to the seller’s nominated bank account. For a clear, reliable online selling workflow and examples of the steps, see our homepage process overview at the Sell Your Damaged Car homepage.
Example situations where selling a non-runner as scrap or to a specialist is often preferable: older vehicles with engine failure where repairs exceed market value, flood-damaged cars with electrical loss, or written-off fleet vehicles where downtime costs are high. Keep in mind that regional demand (e.g., parts sought in Gauteng vs Western Cape) can affect offers.
For owners ready to assess their non-runner, gather clear photos, the VIN/chassis number, a concise damage summary and recent service history. That information helps buyers produce competitive cash offers that factor in parts value, scrap metal and logistics.
