Learn how scrap car prices are calculated in South Africa, what affects offers, paperwork essentials and tips to improve your salvage outcome.
How Scrap Value Is Set
Metal weight, parts demand, model and damage drive final offers.
When to Sell vs Repair
Sell when repair costs approach or exceed current market value.
Paperwork & Collection
Clear title, deregistration help and free towing speed the sale.
This scrap car price guide South Africa explains how scrapyard and salvage prices are formed, what to expect when you sell a damaged or non-running vehicle, and how to get a competitive cash offer. The guide focuses on South African market forces, common damage types, paperwork considerations and practical steps to improve your outcome when turning a vehicle into cash.
| Scenario | Estimated repair cost (R) | Typical retained value vs pre-damage (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Minor bodywork and paint | R5,000 - R15,000 | 75%-95% (depends on age) |
| Major structural or airbag deployment | R25,000 - R80,000+ | 30%-60% |
| Mechanical failure (engine/transmission) | R15,000 - R60,000 | 40%-70% |
Consideration: Repair estimates and retained value are illustrative and given in South African R. Actual repair costs and retained value will vary by workshop, part availability and vehicle condition; use this as a planning reference only.
Deciding whether to repair or sell as scrap depends on several local factors: repair cost vs current market value, how long you plan to keep the vehicle, and availability of buyers for damaged cars in your area (Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and surrounds). If repair costs approach or exceed the vehicle’s market value, selling for salvage or scrap usually makes more financial sense.
For more detail on selling non-running vehicles and how the online process works, see the Sell Non-Running Car information.
If you want a broader overview of our service model and how offers are calculated, read our About / How it works page for full context.
A typical scrap car valuation blends component salvage value, metal weight, and market demand. Buyers will review make/model/year, photos of the vehicle and specific damage notes. For services that manage collection and admin nationwide, you can submit vehicle details and images online and receive a quote reflecting these factors.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offer |
|---|---|
| Minor cosmetic dents and scratches | Low impact; parts and metal still valuable |
| Mechanical failure (engine/transmission) | Moderate impact; usable body and other parts retain value |
| Flood damage | Significant impact; electrical and interior parts often lose value |
| Fire damage | Severe impact; metal still has scrap value but parts are compromised |
| Structural/frame damage | High impact; often classed as written-off, lower salvage offers |
When selling a scrap or damaged car in South Africa, clear title and correct paperwork speed the sale. Key points include identifying whether the vehicle is under finance, ensuring the necessary transfer or deregistration documents are completed, and verifying identity documentation. Services that handle paperwork typically help with deregistration and transfer so you don’t have to navigate eNaTIS processes yourself.
Once you accept an offer with a reputable buyer, the usual steps are: arrange collection (often free across South Africa), sign transfer/deregistration documents, and receive payment. For clarity on a full end-to-end experience with nationwide collection and handled administration, see our Sell Damaged Cars page. If your car does not run, the process for collection and valuation may follow the guidance on our homepage which explains nationwide steps.
Scenario A: A 10-year-old hatchback with a seized engine but intact body - parts and scrap metal value remain, and a buyer that recovers components may still offer a competitive cash amount.
Scenario B: A flood-damaged SUV with widespread electrical faults - offers tend to be lower because many parts are compromised, though the metal and some mechanical parts could still be sold for salvage.
This scrap car price guide South Africa is intended to give South African vehicle owners, private sellers and small fleet managers clear, practical guidance when deciding whether to repair or sell. Use the tables and tips to weigh repair costs against potential scrap outcomes and choose the option that meets your timing, financial and administrative needs.
