Learn how scrap car prices are set in South Africa, what affects offers in R, repair vs scrap trade-offs, and practical tips for getting a transparent cash offer.

SA-Specific Guidance
Examples and legal notes tailored to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban owners.
If you own a written-off, accident-damaged, flood-affected or non-running vehicle, understanding scrap car pricing in South Africa helps you decide whether to sell, repair or part out. This guide explains the main price drivers, gives example ranges in R (South African rand), and shows how the online selling process typically works.
Scrap car offers are usually based on a combination of the vehicle's residual market value, the condition of key components (engine, gearbox, airbags), the demand for parts and metal, and transport or salvage costs. Local salvage buyers, breakers and metal recyclers each value different parts of the vehicle, so offers can vary. Prices are quoted as a cash offer to the owner; factors such as free towing and paperwork handling affect the net amount you receive.
Below are illustrative ranges to give context. These are estimates only: actual offers depend on condition, make/model, age and current market demand.
| Vehicle category | Typical scrap range (R) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Older small car (non-running) | R2,000 - R8,000 | Value from parts & metal; engines in good condition increase offers. |
| Later-model sedan / SUV (written-off) | R8,000 - R40,000+ | Higher-value models and salvageable components drive better offers. |
| Commercial vehicle / bakkie | R6,000 - R35,000+ | Demand for parts and working gearboxes/engines affects pricing. |
Note: figures above are indicative ranges for South Africa and should be treated as estimates. Salvage and scrap metal markets fluctuate with global commodity prices and local parts demand.
| Repair scenario | Estimated repair cost (R) | Likely value retained |
|---|---|---|
| Minor panel & paint | R3,000 - R15,000 | Often increases resale value more than cost for newer cars. |
| Structural or chassis repair | R15,000 - R80,000+ | Often uneconomic; buyers discount heavily for previous structural repairs. |
| Engine rebuild/replacement | R10,000 - R70,000+ | Can be viable for high-value vehicles, less so for older cars. |
If repair costs approach or exceed the anticipated resale value, selling for scrap or parts is often the simpler, lower-risk option. For guidance on selling non-running vehicles, see the Sell Non-Running Car page for a company that handles towing and paperwork in South Africa.
When comparing offers, check whether towing is included and whether the buyer handles deregistration. Free collection and admin can meaningfully increase your net proceeds, especially for non-running vehicles that are costly to move.
For a concise explanation of the process buyers typically follow, see our overview on How it works and the company homepage at Sell Your Damaged Car.
Deciding to sell your car for scrap or fix it depends on three practical tests: cost-to-repair, safety and future reliability, and how quickly you need cash. If repair costs exceed a sensible portion of the vehicle’s market value, or the car requires structural work, selling as scrap or for parts is often preferable.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offer |
|---|---|
| Cosmetic panel damage | Moderate reduction; parts still valuable if rest of car is sound. |
| Engine seized or missing | Large reduction unless gearbox, interior or body are salvageable. |
| Flood or water damage | Significant discount; interior electronics and wiring reduce offers. |
| Structural / chassis damage | Heavy discount; many buyers price assuming parting out only. |
A transparent scrap-for-cash process usually follows these steps: you provide vehicle details and photos, the buyer gives an indicative cash offer, you accept an offer, the buyer arranges free towing (where offered), completes paperwork including deregistration assistance, and payment is released. Services that include free towing and admin handling reduce the logistical burden for sellers across Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and smaller centres.
In South Africa, sold vehicles must be properly transferred or deregistered following road traffic regulations. If your vehicle is still under finance, you need to inform the lender and settle or agree on settlement terms before ownership can pass cleanly. Reputable buyers will handle transfer documents and provide a receipt. For more detail on selling damaged cars and the documentation involved, see Sell Damaged Cars.
After collection, the buyer typically finalises paperwork, deregisters the vehicle if agreed, and processes payment. Payment timing varies; trustworthy services provide verified payment quickly after collection. For a practical example of an online process that offers free towing, paperwork handling and fast payment nationwide, review the company process on the Sell Your Damaged Car homepage.
Example 1: Older hatchback with a seized engine and intact interior - likely best sold for parts or scrap; expected offer range sits towards lower estimates because engine is unusable.
Example 2: Recent-model SUV with front-end collision but a healthy engine and gearbox - parts and repairable items can lift offers considerably compared to full scrap values.
This guide aims to help South African vehicle owners make informed decisions about selling a scrap car for cash. For step-by-step help on selling a non-running car or a damaged vehicle that matches your situation, consult the linked resources above to compare services, inclusions and what to expect during the sale.
