Learn why a written quote matters when selling a scrap car in South Africa, what it should include, and how to protect yourself before collection.
Ask for a Written Quote
Get the offer in email or PDF to confirm price, towing and conditions.
Check Paperwork & Finance
Confirm any outstanding finance and how deregistration will be handled.
Keep a Handover Record
Ensure a signed collection receipt referencing the written quote.
Many South African vehicle owners ask whether scrap car buyers will give a written quote before collection. A clear, written quote protects both seller and buyer by confirming the agreed amount, inclusions (for example towing or deregistration assistance) and any conditions attached to the offer. Whether you’re in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban or a surrounding area, understand the document you should expect and why it matters when dealing with scrap car buyers.
A written quote reduces misunderstandings and helps if a dispute arises after the vehicle is collected. It clarifies whether the quoted amount is final or provisional (for example if a buyer reserves the right to revise the offer after a physical inspection). Sellers should keep a copy of the written quote and any communication leading up to collection.
| Repair cost vs value retained (example figures, SA) | Typical outcome |
|---|---|
| Minor panel damage: estimated repair R5,000-R15,000 | Often worth repairing if market value > R15,000 (seller decision) |
| Major structural damage: repairs R30,000+ | Likely to attract scrap / salvage offers rather than repair |
| Non-running mechanical failure: varies widely | Sellers often prefer a cash offer from buyers who provide towing |
Practical note: If a scrap car buyer refuses to provide any written quote or record of the offer, proceed with caution. Request email confirmation or a simple PDF that restates the price and collection terms.
For a clear step-by-step view of how a buyer like Sell Your Damaged Car operates, see our About / How it works page here. If your vehicle is not running, review specific guidance on selling a non-running car here.
A written quote from a scrap buyer helps you compare the net cash outcome of selling against the cost of repair. Consider the following factors in a South African context: repair estimate (get at least one local quote), the vehicle’s pre-accident market value, time and inconvenience, and the availability of free towing from the buyer. Avoid assuming identical outcomes across buyers-offers depend on demand for parts, salvage values and local scrapyard prices.
| Damage types | Typical impact on written quote |
|---|---|
| Front-end cosmetic damage | Moderate reduction; some buyers offer competitive prices for recyclable parts |
| Structural/frame damage | Significant reduction; often classified as salvage/written-off |
| Flood or fire damage | Strongly affects offers; many buyers pay only for scrapable components |
Typical steps when a scrap car buyer provides a written quote before collection:
In South Africa, sellers should check whether there is outstanding finance on the vehicle. If the vehicle is under finance, buyers commonly require settlement from the finance provider before full transfer; this should be stated in the written quote. A reputable buyer will offer assistance with the necessary paperwork and deregistration steps. For more on selling damaged cars and what we buy, see our Sell Damaged Cars page here.
After collection, the buyer should finalise the paperwork and release payment per the written quote. Expect a final handover document that records the vehicle’s condition at collection, the agreed amount and confirmation of transfer or deregistration steps. If there is a discrepancy between the written quote and the post-collection inspection that leads to a changed offer, the buyer should contact you, document the reason and provide time to accept or decline the revised amount.
If you want a straightforward online valuation and a documented offer process, our homepage explains how we give transparent offers and manage collection across South Africa: Sell Your Damaged Car.
