Learn how verified weighbridges, weight-based pricing and clear paperwork protect sellers of scrap or salvage vehicles in South Africa.
Why verified weighbridges matter
Certified scale tickets provide auditable weight readings and reduce disputes.
Check paperwork and calibration
Request weigh tickets, calibration details and signed receipts before payment.
Prepare your vehicle
Remove personal items, document condition and keep photos to support the sale.
When you sell a vehicle for scrap in South Africa, many buyers set prices based on the vehicle's gross weight, metal content and salvage condition. Using a verified weighbridge or calibrated scale protects both seller and buyer by producing an auditable weight reading. Knowing how scrap car buyers calculate weight-based pricing helps you check offers, avoid disputes and make better decisions about repair versus sale.
Most scrap car buyers calculate an offer from the tare/gross weight measured on a certified weighbridge, then apply a per-kilogram metal rate adjusted for condition, contamination (fluids, tyres) and market scrap metal prices. The final payable amount often reflects deductions for hazardous materials, parts retained, or costs to dispose of non-metal components.
A verified scale or weighbridge is one that has been inspected, calibrated and certified by the appropriate authority or an accredited laboratory. For sellers this means:
Ask for the weighbridge ticket, check the vehicle description on the ticket, and get the buyer to sign the documentation. If the buyer is working with a broker or transporter, request the weigh ticket at collection to avoid later disputes.
Small steps can produce a clearer, fairer weight reading. Remove loose personal items, drain any large volumes of fuel if the buyer permits (note safety and legal requirements), and note where parts have been stripped previously. Document the vehicle with photos before collection. If you plan to sell a non-running or heavily damaged vehicle, review the collection and paperwork process explained on the About / How it works page to confirm who arranges weighbridge access.
| Scenario | Typical repair cost (estimate, R) | Value retained after repair (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Minor panel repairs | R5,000 - R15,000 | High (vehicle usually remains roadworthy) |
| Major structural / frame damage | R20,000 - R80,000+ | Low to moderate (market stigma, possible write-off) |
| Non-running / mechanical failure | R10,000 - R50,000+ | Variable (depends on age and parts demand) |
Note: these figures are illustrative estimates for South Africa and will vary by make, model, mileage and local labour rates. For vehicles that are clearly beyond economically sensible repair, many owners prefer to compare repair estimates with weight-based scrap valuations and third-party salvage options such as those described on the Sell Damaged Cars page.
Deciding whether to accept a scrap valuation based on verified scale weight depends on several South Africa-specific factors: the estimated repair cost (in R), the vehicle's market demand for parts, and the time and hassle of arranging repairs. If repair estimates exceed a sensible percentage of the vehicle's pre-damage market value, or if replacement parts are scarce, a weight-based sale can be the pragmatic choice.
| Damage type | Effect on weight-based pricing |
|---|---|
| Complete vehicle with fluids | Higher gross weight; buyers may deduct for fluid disposal and VAT. |
| Stripped vehicle (parts removed) | Lower payable weight; provide a parts list to avoid confusion. |
| Severe corrosion | Reduced metal yield; buyer may apply a lower per-kg rate. |
Trusted buyers will provide a printed weigh ticket showing the vehicle ID, gross and tare weights, date/time and the weighbridge operator. Ask whether the weighbridge is periodically calibrated and whether copies of calibration certificates are available on request. Keep a digital photo of the weigh ticket and insist on a signed receipt when the vehicle changes hands. If the buyer offers free collection, confirm whether the weighbridge reading occurs at the collection site, at the buyer's yard, or at an independent facility; independent weigh tickets are usually stronger evidence in disputes.
If you want a straightforward sale path for a non-running vehicle, review the logistics and collection policies on the Sell Non-Running Car page before you commit to a buyer. For general site services and customer reviews, the homepage is a useful reference.
After an agreed weigh and valuation, ensure the sale is documented: a signed transfer or sale receipt, the weigh ticket and payment confirmation. In South Africa, deregistration or transfer of ownership should be agreed in writing; many professional buyers offer to handle deregistration and paperwork on behalf of the seller. Keep copies of ID and vehicle documentation until payment is cleared and the ownership change is confirmed.
This guide explains common practices for scrap car buyers, verified weighbridges and weight-based pricing in South Africa. Figures are illustrative; always request documentation, compare multiple buyers when possible and keep records in R to protect your transaction.
