Learn how salvage car payouts are calculated in South Africa, what affects your cash settlement, and the legal and paperwork steps to complete after a write-off.
What a Salvage Payout Is
Cash settlement when a vehicle is written off, based on pre-loss market value.
Factors That Affect Payouts
Damage type, pre-loss value, excess, salvage retention and finance status.
Paperwork & Practical Steps
Get written valuations, settle bond obligations and complete transfer/deregistration.
A salvage car payout is the cash settlement an insurer or buyer offers when a vehicle is declared a total loss or written off. In South Africa this can arise after collision damage, flood, fire or severe mechanical failure. The payout reflects the vehicle's pre-loss market value minus any salvage retention, policy excess and administrative deductions. For many owners the option to accept a cash settlement or sell the vehicle as salvage is a practical way to close a claim quickly and recover value without lengthy repairs.
Deciding whether to accept a salvage payout or repair depends on cost, safety and future value. If repair estimates approach or exceed the vehicle's pre-accident market value, a payout is often the sensible route. Consider time, availability of certified parts, vehicle history effects on resale value, and whether the car will be road-legal after repair. Private owners and small fleets in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban frequently weigh quick cash and free collection options against the uncertainty of refurbished salvage vehicles.
| Scenario | Estimated repair cost (R) | Typical value retained after repair |
|---|---|---|
| Minor structural + panel damage | R10,000 - R30,000 | 70%-85% of pre-loss value |
| Major structural/frame damage | R50,000 - R150,000 | 40%-65% of pre-loss value |
| Flood or fire damage | Variable - often high | 20%-60% of pre-loss value |
Note: Figures above are illustrative estimates for the South African market and will vary by make, model, year and region. Always obtain written repair quotes and insurer valuations.
Insurers typically follow these steps: determine the vehicle's market value before the incident, subtract the agreed excess, deduct salvage value if you keep the car, and apply any policy limits. Market valuation considers recent private and trade sales in South Africa, mileage, condition prior to loss, and demand for parts in the salvage market. The result is the offered payout.
| Damage type | How it affects payout |
|---|---|
| Cosmetic / panel damage | Lower impact if no structural issues; payout nearer market value after repairs. |
| Structural/frame damage | Significant reduction; often declared total loss due to safety concerns. |
| Flood / water damage | High risk to electronics and engines; lower salvage market and smaller offers. |
| Fire damage | Often results in total loss with minimal salvage value, depending on extent. |
If you plan to sell a written-off vehicle privately or to a buyer, specialist buyers (including online services) consider the same factors. For an explanation of how we handle damaged vehicles and offers, see the About / How it works page for more detail.
Owners can usually accept the insurer's payout and hand the vehicle to the insurer, or retain the vehicle and accept a reduced payout reflecting salvage value. Keeping the vehicle may suit those who can repair the car themselves or sell parts, but it carries additional admin (deregistration, transfer) and potential roadworthiness issues. For options on selling non-running cars or heavily damaged vehicles, see our Sell Non-Running Car resource.
After a payout decision, paperwork is crucial. Typical steps include signing claim settlement documents, arranging transfer of ownership, and deregistration if required. If the insurer collects the vehicle, they usually handle transfer. If you sell the salvage vehicle privately or to a specialist buyer, ensure you complete a written transfer or sale agreement and notify the registration authority to remove liability. Vehicles under finance must have the outstanding bond settled - discuss settlement figures with your finance provider and insurer to avoid residual liability.
Example: A 2015 sedan in Cape Town is written off after a collision. Insurer values pre-loss market at R120,000, excess is R5,000, and salvage retention if kept is R15,000. If the owner hands the car to the insurer, the payout calculation would roughly be R120,000 minus R5,000 = R115,000 before any tax or administrative adjustments. If the owner keeps the car, the insurer may reduce the payout by the salvage value (e.g., offer R100,000). These numbers are illustrative; actual figures depend on insurer practice and policy wording.
If the insurer or buyer collects the vehicle, they should provide written proof of collection and a final settlement statement. Payment timing depends on insurer processes; some pay out quickly after paperwork is completed while others may take longer pending checks. If you retain the vehicle after settlement, follow the transfer and deregistration steps to avoid future legal or financial exposure. For an overview of company processes for handling damaged vehicles, consult our homepage.
If you’re unsure how a payout was calculated, request the insurer’s valuation breakdown and consider independent appraisal. Document conversations and retain copies of all settlement paperwork for your records.
This guide is intended to explain typical practices and considerations around salvage car payouts in South Africa. Figures are indicative and will vary by insurer, vehicle and region. For personalised advice, request written valuation details from your insurer and consider an independent assessor.
