If a vehicle is still financed, the bank or finance company holds a security interest (a lien) against the registration document. That means you cannot transfer full legal ownership to a buyer until the lender confirms the debt has been settled or provides written consent for transfer. For salvage cars, insurers and lenders often have additional administrative steps because a vehicle classified as a write-off may involve insurer settlement and salvage title processes.
There are three frequent options when selling a salvage car with outstanding finance in South Africa:
Example: A salvage Toyota with an outstanding balance of R80,000. The lender issues a settlement figure valid for 7 days. Options include settling R80,000 to obtain a clearance letter, or arranging for a buyer to pay the lender directly and pay you any balance. Insurer involvement may apply if the vehicle was written off: the insurer may already have paid the lender and the vehicle may be under insurer ownership - check your title documents first.

Once the lender confirms settlement or provides written consent, the next steps are transfer of ownership and deregistration where necessary. In South Africa, an official transfer form (or electronic transfer via the registering authority) plus ID and proof of payment/clearance are normally required. If the logbook is physically held by the bank, arrange collection or follow the bank’s process to release documents to the buyer or to the settlement agent.
