Legal & Finance Help
We assist with deregistration and settling vehicles under finance.
If your vehicle has been damaged by fire, the process to sell a fire-damaged car in South Africa follows clear steps: assess safety and damage, decide whether to repair or sell, obtain valuations, and complete transfer or salvage paperwork. Selling can be faster and more practical than repairing when structural or electrical damage is extensive. Sell Your Damaged Car buys fire-damaged, non-running and written-off vehicles nationwide and helps with free towing and paperwork.
Deciding whether to repair or sell depends on repair cost, residual market value, safety and availability of parts. For many South African owners a competitive cash offer for a fire-damaged vehicle is preferable when repair costs approach or exceed reasonable resale value, or when the car is written off by an insurer.
| Scenario | Estimated repair cost (R) | Typical value retained after repair |
|---|---|---|
| Minor panel / interior fire (localized) | R5,000 - R25,000 | 60%-80% of pre-damage market value |
| Electrical / engine bay fire | R20,000 - R80,000+ | 30%-60% of pre-damage market value |
| Severe structural / total loss | Often uneconomic | Salvage / parts market value only |
Estimates above are illustrative and depend on make, model, age and extent of damage; R ranges are approximate. For an immediate indication of an offer and nationwide collection, use the Sell Your Damaged Car homepage to upload photos and details. To understand our approach to damaged and non-running vehicles, see our Sell Damaged Cars page.
Quick note: a vehicle declared a write-off by your insurer is commonly sold to the salvage market. Understanding salvage demand for parts (engine, body panels, electronics) affects offers.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offers |
|---|---|
| Superficial interior fire | Moderate reduction; many parts reusable |
| Engine bay / wiring fire | Significant reduction - electrical repairs are costly |
| Structural / chassis heat damage | Major reduction - often marketed as salvage only |
If you want a clear, obligation-free assessment of your fire-damaged vehicle, our assessment process is explained in more detail on the How it works page.
The typical, low-friction route for selling a fire-damaged car in South Africa includes: submit vehicle details and photos, receive an obligation-free cash offer, accept the offer, and arrange collection. Sell Your Damaged Car arranges free towing nationwide, handles paperwork (including deregistration where applicable) and releases payment promptly once the vehicle is collected and verified.
Selling a fire-damaged car carries the same core transfer and deregistration steps as any vehicle sale, but with extra attention to disclosure and finance liens. If a vehicle is still financed, settlement of the finance account must be arranged - the finance holder has an interest in the vehicle. We can liaise with finance companies on behalf of sellers to speed up settlement and transfer. Deregistration and notifications to authorities are handled during collection where required.
After collection the vehicle is inspected and processed for payment release. Depending on condition it may be sold for parts, internal refurbishment for specific components, or sold to licensed salvage operators. Paperwork including a signed transfer form and any deregistration documents are completed as part of collection so you don’t need to visit test stations or licensing offices.
We operate nationwide - from Johannesburg and Pretoria to Cape Town and Durban - and provide free towing in metros and many surrounding areas. For fleet owners with multiple fire-damaged vehicles we can manage bulk collections and documentation. Because the South African salvage market often values reusable parts, older vehicles can still have meaningful salvage value even when structurally impacted.
If you want to compare options for a non-running or severely-damaged vehicle, consider our dedicated pages for selling non-running vehicles and damaged cars: Sell Non-Running Car and Sell Damaged Cars. For an overview of our service model and what to expect from valuation to collection, see our How it works page.
