A practical South Africa guide to the process of selling a salvage car: valuation factors, finance issues, required documents, timelines and tips to maximise value.

Change-of-ownership, finance settlements and deregistration explained.
How damage affects offers
Structural, flood and mechanical issues have different valuation impacts.
Selling a salvage car in South Africa can feel complex: there are paperwork steps, market-specific valuation factors and legal considerations (especially if the vehicle is under finance or written off). This guide explains the practical process of selling a salvage car in SA, with examples in R, common timelines, and links to helpful pages on our site.
A salvage car generally refers to a vehicle declared a total loss by an insurer or one with significant damage that makes it uneconomic to repair. The salvage market in South Africa includes dismantlers, rebuilders, export buyers and specialist buyers who purchase vehicles for parts or salvage value. Understanding the process of selling a salvage car in SA helps you save time, avoid legal pitfalls, and get a transparent, competitive cash offer.
Deciding whether to repair or sell depends on repair cost, the vehicle's pre-accident market value, and how long repairs will take. For many owners, selling a salvage car is faster and lower risk than funding major repairs and re-registration, especially when repair estimates approach or exceed the vehicle's market value.
| Scenario | Typical repair cost (estimate) | Estimated value retained after repair |
|---|---|---|
| Minor structural damage (repair R10,000-R30,000) | R10,000-R30,000 | 70-90% of pre-damage value |
| Major structural or flood damage (repair R50,000+) | R50,000+ | Often under 60% of pre-damage value |
| Engine/transmission write-off (repair R40,000+) | R40,000+ | Variable - frequently below repair cost |
Figures are illustrative and reflect South African market patterns. Exact values depend on make, model, age and parts availability.
If you want a practical route to sell quickly, our simple online process accepts salvage vehicles in any condition; see the company overview for how we operate on the About / How it works page.
Below is a practical sequence you can expect when selling a salvage car to a specialist buyer in South Africa.
Collect the registration papers, ID, proof of address and any insurance/accident reports. Take clear photos showing VIN/chassis, interior, odometer and damage areas. Buyers rely on these to value the vehicle remotely.
If the vehicle is under finance, you must inform the financier and settle or arrange a payout. Specialist buyers can often coordinate with financiers, but transfer only occurs after settlement. For details on selling non-running vehicles, refer to our Sell Non-Running Car page.
Upload your details and photos to receive a transparent cash offer. Offers are based on condition, salvage demand, location and vehicle history.
Once you accept an offer, the buyer should handle paperwork (including deregistration where applicable), arrange free towing nationwide and release payment promptly after collection. For more about selling damaged vehicles, see Sell Damaged Cars.
Legal steps when selling a salvage car include completing a change-of-ownership, noting any insurance write-off paperwork and deregistration if the vehicle is being scrapped. Buyers who collect nationwide should provide a clear transfer process and a signed receipt confirming the transaction and condition.
If the car is financed, the finance house has a legal interest and must be paid out or provide written consent. If the insurer has written the vehicle off, they may still hold claim rights; confirm the title status before transfer. Specialist buyers experienced in salvage transactions typically coordinate settlements and advise on next steps.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offer |
|---|---|
| Superficial cosmetic damage | Lower reduction; parts and paint can be restored affordably |
| Structural/frame damage | Significant reduction due to repair complexity and safety concerns |
| Engine/transmission failure | Lower offer unless engines or gearboxes are in demand for parts |
| Flood or fire damage | Often heavily discounted due to electrical and corrosion risks |
After collection, expect the buyer to provide a signed sale receipt and to complete change-of-ownership forms. If the vehicle is being scrapped or exported for parts, deregistration paperwork should be provided. Keep copies of all documents; these protect you if questions arise later.
Times vary by city and region - Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban typically see faster collection windows than remote areas.
For a straightforward, documented sale path for salvage vehicles, specialist services can help with valuation, free nationwide towing, and handling the paperwork. Learn how our online valuation and collection flow works on the homepage and the About / How it works page.
