Understand the full process of deregistering a non-running or written-off vehicle in South Africa. Learn requirements, paperwork, and why formal deregistration is essential.
If your vehicle is no longer roadworthy due to accident damage, mechanical failure, or has become a non-runner, it's important to formally deregister it in South Africa. This protects you from unnecessary license renewal fees and legal liabilities, and helps avoid penalties for unlicensed vehicles left on record. Deregistration is particularly relevant if you plan to sell a non-running car or scrap it for parts.
Deregistration is the process of removing a vehicle from the National Traffic Information System (eNaTIS) once it is permanently withdrawn from use on public roads. This is required if the car is:
You should deregister as soon as it is clear the vehicle won't return to the road. Typical scenarios include:
| Situation | Deregistration Required? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Written-off after accident | Yes | Mandatory if insurer does not repair |
| Non-running; sold for parts | Yes | Prevents ongoing licensing costs |
| Still in storage, possible repair | No | Only deregister if decision to scrap is final |
In South Africa, the registered owner remains responsible for all traffic penalties, licensing fees, and liabilities attached to the vehicle until deregistration is complete, even if the car is no longer drivable. This process is governed by the National Road Traffic Act (No. 93 of 1996).
| Document | Where to Get It | Why Needed |
|---|---|---|
| RC1/Registration Certificate | Licensing Department | Proves ownership of the vehicle |
| Form ADV | Traffic office or online portal | Official application for deregistration |
| Proof for deregistration | Insurer, buyer, or SAPS | Confirms vehicle is scrapped, stolen unrecovered, or unrepairable |
Once finalised, you're no longer responsible for license renewal on the vehicle, and the car is marked as unfit for public roads. If you've sold to a specialist like Sell Your Damaged Car, ensure the deregistration confirmation is retained for your records. If you're unsure about any paperwork, visit the About Us section or Sell Non-Running Car page for more information.
Deregistering a non-running vehicle isn't complicated-but it's crucial for staying compliant and avoiding unwanted costs. Professional services are available if you prefer a hands-off, low-risk experience, especially if your car needs towing and immediate payment.
