Compare private sale and instant online offers for damaged, written-off or non-running cars in South Africa. Learn costs, paperwork, towing and which option suits you.
Time vs Value
Private sale may fetch more for minor damage; instant offers save time and hassle.
Paperwork & Towing
Instant offers typically include free towing and administration support nationwide.
Best for Non-Running Cars
When repairs exceed value, instant online offers are often the practical choice.
When a vehicle has accident damage, mechanical failure or won’t run, South African owners face two common routes: attempt a private sale or accept an instant online offer from a specialist buyer. This guide compares the two approaches - focusing on time, cost, risk and paperwork - so you can choose the option that matches your priorities in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and surrounding areas.
Deciding whether to repair a damaged vehicle and sell, or sell as-is, depends on repair cost, the car’s pre-damage market value, and how long you’re willing to wait. For many written-off or non-running vehicles, repair costs often exceed the realistic increase in resale value.
| Scenario | Repair cost (estimate, R) | Typical value retained after repair |
|---|---|---|
| Minor cosmetic damage (panels, bumper) | R2 000 - R12 000 | Moderate increase; viable if repairs are low-cost |
| Structural/airbag deployment | R20 000 - R100 000+ | Limited value uplift; often uneconomic to repair |
| Mechanical failure (engine/transmission) | R10 000 - R80 000 | Depends on vehicle age; may be better sold as-is |
Estimates above are typical South Africa ranges and will vary by make, model and severity. If repair cost nears or exceeds the car’s market value, an instant online offer from a specialist is often the practical choice.
Instant online offers aim to reduce time and logistical friction. The typical steps are:
For a clear explanation of how a specialist buyer operates, see our overview on the About / How it works page.
If your car won’t start, the process for selling a non-running vehicle can differ slightly; review specific guidance on the Sell Non-Running Car page for tips on photos and access.
Selling a vehicle, even when damaged, requires correct documentation. Specialist buyers commonly help with transfer forms, deregistration where applicable, and settlement of any existing finance. If the vehicle is under finance, you must inform the financier - a specialist buyer will often coordinate payoff instructions so the transfer is lawful and clear.
Whether you choose a private sale or an instant online offer, small steps can improve the outcome:
| Damage type | Typical impact on offer |
|---|---|
| Superficial cosmetic damage | Minor reduction; easy to document and value |
| Structural/frame damage | Significant reduction due to repair cost and resale limitations |
| Flood or fire damage | Offers vary widely; specialists factor salvageability and safety concerns |
After you accept an instant online offer and the vehicle is collected, reputable buyers will finalise paperwork (including deregistration where required), settle any outstanding finance according to instructions, and transfer cleared funds to your bank account. Expect to receive confirmation of ownership transfer or deregistration once the process completes. For a step-by-step walkthrough of selling damaged vehicles specifically, visit our Sell Damaged Cars page.
Practical example: A Hernando (fictional) seller in Durban had a non-running vehicle with a seized gearbox. Repair estimates exceeded R35 000. After comparing weeks of private enquiries and offers that required the buyer to arrange and pay for towing, the owner accepted an instant online offer that included free collection, paperwork assistance and a fast payment - saving time and logistic headaches. This type of scenario is common when mechanical faults require specialist towing and admin.
If you prioritise maximum net value and have time to manage viewings, a private sale can sometimes yield a marginally higher price for minor-damage, roadworthy vehicles. If you value speed, minimal admin, free towing and a transparent outcome - and especially if the car is non-running, flood- or fire-damaged, or written-off - an instant online offer is frequently the more practical option.
For practical guidance on how specialist buyers operate and step-by-step expectations, see our main site for a full process overview: Sell Your Damaged Car homepage.
