Discover the full costs, hidden risks, and legal steps involved in private car sales in South Africa. Learn about paperwork, roadworthy, and admin fees, plus free alternatives.
Selling your car privately in South Africa can appear straightforward, but many vehicle owners are surprised by the real expenses and time involved. From paid advertising to required paperwork and unexpected after-sale administration, understanding all the typical costs and fees is crucial before choosing a private sale route.
Whether you're based in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban or in surrounding areas, this guide breaks down mandatory and optional expenses, legal compliance requirements, and key pitfalls to watch for. This knowledge helps you compare private sales with specialist car-buying services like Sell Your Damaged Car.
| Expense | Estimated Cost (R) | Notes (SA Context) |
|---|---|---|
| Online ad listing | R100 - R800 | Major sites charge per listing, with add-on features extra |
| Professional valet/detailing | R400 - R2,000 | Improves appeal, not always essential |
| Roadworthy certificate (CoR) | R500 - R1,200 | Required for ownership change |
| Settlement on car under finance | Varies (see finance) | Obtain & clear before transfer |
| Deregistration/registration admin fee | R250 - R600 | Some offices/agents charge for help |
| Towing (if not running) | R700 - R2,000+ | Ranges depend on distance and region |
For non-running, accident-damaged, or salvage-status vehicles, these costs often increase and admin becomes more complex. Explore alternatives or professional buying services like Sell Non-Running Car or Sell Damaged Cars for a simpler, all-inclusive process.
Under South African law, most private vehicle sales require a valid Certificate of Roadworthiness (CoR) before transfer of ownership. Obtaining this certificate may involve pre-testing repairs, adding to the expense. Additionally, deregistration and official change of ownership-handled by your city's licensing office or municipality-may incur further administrative costs or agent fees if you choose professional assistance.
If the car is still financed, you must request a written settlement amount from the bank and settle the balance before transfer. There may be early settlement admin fees, typically ranging from R150 - R500 depending on the financial institution. Delays may also arise, affecting how quickly the transaction concludes and raising your risk and admin workload during the sales process.
Beyond direct expenses, consider the time investment involved in fielding calls, hosting viewings (sometimes for tyre-kickers only), negotiating, and managing all documentation. For business owners or those with limited time, these opportunity costs can quickly outweigh any perceived private sale pricing advantage-especially for high-mileage, older, or damaged vehicles.
| Aspect | Private Sale | Sell Your Damaged Car |
|---|---|---|
| Advertising Fees | Seller Pays | Included |
| Admin/Paperwork | Seller Handles/May Pay Agent | Included |
| Roadworthy Certificate | Often Seller Pays | Not Required (as-is purchase) |
| Collection/Towing | Seller Pays if Non-Runner | Included |
| Payment Speed | Varies, Can Be Delayed | Near-Instant After Collection |
