Learn what affects offers for non-working vehicles in South Africa, steps to improve your offer, legal paperwork and realistic valuation factors across metros.
What Drives Value
Model, damage type, parts availability and local salvage demand determine offers.
Sell vs Repair Decision
If repair costs near market value, selling often saves time, money and hassle.
Paperwork & Collection
Nationwide towing and assistance with deregistration speed up settlement.
If your vehicle is non-working, written-off or mechanically compromised, price expectations depend on condition, model, age, and the local salvage demand. This guide explains typical valuation drivers in South Africa and practical steps to set realistic expectations.
The phrase price expectations for non-working vehicles in South Africa captures a range of scenarios: a vehicle that won’t start, an accident-written-off car, or a mechanically failed fleet unit. Key factors that buyers consider are the vehicle's make and model, year, mileage, extent of visible damage, availability of spare parts, and the salvage market demand in metros like Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Offers are typically a percentage of the undamaged market value and vary by region and demand.
Deciding to repair or sell a non-working vehicle depends on projected repair costs compared to the vehicle's post-repair market value. For many owners in South Africa - especially with older cars or severe structural damage - selling to a specialist buyer can be simpler and lower risk than investing in repairs.
| Scenario | Typical repair cost (R, estimate) | Expected value retained after repair |
|---|---|---|
| Minor electrical / starter fault | R2,000 - R8,000 | High (70-90% of pre-fault value) |
| Major engine/transmission work | R15,000 - R60,000+ | Low to medium (30-60% of pre-fault value) |
| Structural/accident repairs (frame) | R20,000 - R100,000+ | Often low (20-50% of pre-fault value) |
Estimates above are illustrative for South Africa and will vary by make, model and local labour/parts costs. If repair costs approach or exceed the vehicle’s market value, selling for salvage or parts is often the more economical route. For help understanding the sale option, see our About / How it works page for a breakdown of the sale process.
A 2010 sedan with a failed gearbox in a Johannesburg suburb may attract different offers than the same model in a Cape Town suburb because of local demand and parts availability. For non-running vehicles, consideration of transport logistics matters-specialist buyers who offer free towing nationwide typically provide more convenient, transparent outcomes for sellers.
If your car doesn’t run at all, refer to the guidance on selling non-running vehicles to compare routes: Sell Non-Running Car.
Specialist buyers in South Africa follow a consistent workflow: you submit vehicle details and photos, receive an indicative offer, accept or decline, and if accepted we arrange collection, complete paperwork and release payment. For an explanation of company procedures and what to expect on the day of collection, see our About / How it works page.
When selling a non-working or written-off vehicle you should confirm ownership, existing finance status, and how deregistration is handled. Vehicles under finance generally require settlement with the lender before transfer of ownership; specialist buyers often assist by liaising with financiers and managing deregistration documentation to speed up the process.
While non-working cars often command lower offers than running equivalents, simple steps can improve offers without investing in costly repairs.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offers |
|---|---|
| Non-running (unknown fault) | Moderate reduction; buyer factors in diagnostic and tow costs |
| Flood-damaged | Significant reduction; electrical and corrosion risks lower offers |
| Structural/frame damage | High reduction; affects resale and repair feasibility |
| Cosmetic or minor mechanical | Lower reduction; parts and repair costs are modest |
Once the vehicle is collected the buyer typically completes transfer paperwork and arranges deregistration if required. Payment is released and verified according to the agreed terms. For sellers in metros and surrounding areas, nationwide collection and administration support reduces the logistics and paperwork burden.
If you want to compare options for damaged cars specifically, our guidance on damaged vehicles explains typical differences in handling: Sell Damaged Cars. For quick access to our homepage, see Sell Your Damaged Car.
A small business with a non-running delivery bakkie in Durban may choose to sell rather than wait for costly repairs and downtime. Selling to a specialist frees up cash, removes storage and repair risk, and simplifies fleet administration. In many cases the time saved and reduced administrative burden are decisive factors for fleet managers.
