Learn the essential documentation for selling a damaged car in Pretoria: registration, finance settlement, police/insurer reports, deregistration and collection tips.
Selling a damaged car in Pretoria involves more than agreeing a cash price. Local procedures, Johannesburg Road Traffic Authority (RTMC) processes, and the expectations of tow operators and salvage buyers mean the right documentation speeds collection, ensures lawful transfer and protects you from future liability. This guide explains which documents matter, how to handle vehicles under finance, and practical steps unique to Pretoria and Gauteng.
Having documents ready prevents delays during collection and helps with deregistration. Prepare the following where applicable:
Note: If you cannot find the registration certificate, a clear copy of the ID and official proof of ownership (e.g., recent service invoice, original purchase agreement) helps expedite verification. Some buyers can accept vehicles with missing documents but expect additional ID checks and a slightly different transfer process.
| Document | Why it's needed |
|---|---|
| Registration certificate | Proves ownership and is required for lawful transfer or deregistration. |
| ID document | Verifies seller identity and supports transfer paperwork. |
| Finance settlement letter | Shows outstanding bond amount and lender instructions for settlement and release. |
| Police accident report | Useful for claims history and clarifying write-off status for buyers or insurers. |
If your car in Pretoria is bonded, you cannot legally transfer full ownership without the lender's consent. Typical steps include obtaining a settlement figure from the bondholder and arranging a payment as part of the sale. Selling a damaged vehicle while bonded is common, and many buyers (including professional salvage buyers) work with lenders to settle the bond during transfer.
Example: A vehicle with an outstanding finance balance of R45,000 may require the buyer to pay that amount to the lender on collection or arrange a third-party settlement. Exact arrangements vary; demand a written settlement figure from the lender before accepting any offer.
Deregistration or transfer after sale is a legal step to remove liability and ensure the buyer becomes the official owner. For written-off or salvage vehicles, many buyers (including professional buyers operating nationwide) will handle deregistration and any necessary RTMC or licensing office interactions. If you are responsible for deregistration, expect to submit the registration certificate, signed transfer forms and ID to the local licensing office or via an authorised agent.
If the vehicle was involved in an accident that was reported to the insurer or police, having those documents speeds valuation and verifies write-off status. Insurer valuations, salvage authorisations and police case numbers are commonly requested by buyers assessing liability, plate checks and history checks in Gauteng.
| Damage type | Typical documentation needed |
|---|---|
| Total loss / insurer write-off | Insurer write-off letter, claim number, proof of payout or consent to sell. |
| Mechanical failure (non-running) | Service history, owner ID, registration certificate; less insurer paperwork required. |
| Flood or fire damage | Detailed damage photos, insurer reports if available, and honest condition declarations. |
After collection, reputable buyers will provide a signed proof of removal, handle deregistration or transfer, and confirm payment. Keep a copy of the proof of removal and payment confirmation. If you used a buyer that offers free towing and paperwork handling, verify that they provide written confirmation outlining what they will submit to local authorities in Tshwane or the national RTMC.
Scenario: You are in Pretoria East with a non-running hatchback previously involved in a collision. You have the registration document but the car is bonded. The buyer requests a finance settlement figure. You arrange the lender quote (R28,500), the buyer agrees to handle payout on collection, and you provide ID and a signed transfer/disposal form. The buyer collects with free towing, pays the agreed cash balance to you, and confirms settlement with the lender. You keep copies of the signed removal document and bank confirmation.
