Know What Affects Value
Damage type, running condition and market demand determine offers.
An online scrap car valuation gives South African owners a quick estimate of what a damaged, written-off or non-running vehicle might fetch on the salvage market. The valuation typically considers make, model, year, mileage, visible damage, whether the car is running and market demand for parts. Many services - including specialist buyers - provide an immediate guideline quote after you upload photos and basic vehicle details.
Note: An online scrap car valuation is an estimate based on submitted information. Final offers can change after inspection or collection.
Deciding whether to repair or sell as scrap depends on repair cost, the car’s market value, downtime and your tolerance for managing repairs. If repair estimates approach or exceed a large share of the vehicle’s retail value, selling as scrap is often the more pragmatic option.
| Scenario | Typical repair cost (R) | Value retained after repair (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Minor bumper and panel repair | R5,000-R20,000 | 70-90% |
| Major accident repair (structural) | R30,000-R120,000+ | 30-60% |
| Engine or transmission replacement | R20,000-R80,000 | 40-75% |
| Damage type | Typical impact on offers |
|---|---|
| Superficial exterior (bumper, lights) | Lower impact; parts resellable, moderate reduction |
| Structural/frame damage | High impact; significantly reduces offers due to repair complexity |
| Engine/transmission failure | Moderate-to-high impact depending on availability of working units |
| Flood and fire damage | Severe impact; many systems affected, large reductions common |
If you want a practical demonstration of how online quotes work, try submitting details on our homepage: https://sellyourdamagedcar.co.za/ to see a sample valuation flow.
For non-running vehicles, a dedicated pathway often produces a clearer scrap valuation - see our non-running car guidance for specifics: Sell Non-Running Car.
Most reliable online valuations follow the same steps: you submit vehicle details and photos, the system or valuation team assesses condition and market demand, and you receive an initial estimate. If you accept, the buyer arranges inspection, handles paperwork and collects the vehicle. In South Africa, reputable services include free towing and admin to simplify the transfer.
When selling a scrap or written-off vehicle in South Africa, clear ownership and correct paperwork are essential. Buyers should confirm a valid registration document, proof of ID, and whether the vehicle is still under finance. If the car is financed, you must contact the finance provider; many buyers coordinate settlement with the lender as part of the collection process.
Deregistration and transfer of ownership are usually handled by the purchasing company or through provincial traffic authorities. For an explanation of how the buyer handles admin, see our About page which outlines responsibility for paperwork and collection: About / How it works.
After the buyer collects your vehicle, they complete transfer paperwork and deregistration tasks where applicable. Payment timelines vary by buyer but reputable services provide fast payment once transfer is verified. If your vehicle was under finance, settlement confirmation from the lender typically precedes final payment to you.
If you want to compare the scrap valuation route to selling a damaged car more broadly, our Sell Damaged Cars page outlines alternatives and what we typically buy across South Africa’s major metros: Sell Damaged Cars.
Example: a 2010 mid-size sedan with front-end accident damage and a non-running engine might receive a lower online estimate because salvage demand for parts and the cost of towing/processing must be factored in. Estimates will vary by region - parts demand in Cape Town may differ from Johannesburg - so regional fiat and logistics matter. Price ranges quoted online are estimates; final offers are confirmed after inspection.
If you prefer to see an immediate online valuation from a specialist buyer, submit clear photos and details on our homepage to receive an obligation-free estimate and learn how free towing and paperwork handling are typically included in the process: https://sellyourdamagedcar.co.za/.
