Learn why odometer and dashboard photos are crucial for South African car sales. Get tips to boost trust, match paperwork, and secure better offers on damaged vehicles.
When selling a used car - especially if it's damaged, non-running or written-off - providing clear odometer and dashboard photos is critical to a smooth sale. These images aren't just for show; they're vital for transparency, accurate offers, and protecting both sellers and buyers in South Africa's used car market.
Most reputable car-buying services, including Sell Your Damaged Car, require photos showing the car's mileage and dashboard warning lights. These details can significantly affect both legal paperwork and the cash offer you receive. Let's look at why these photos matter and how to get them right.
| Mileage (km) | Dashboard Warning? | Impact on Offer |
|---|---|---|
| Below 80,000 | No | Higher offer, especially if accident or mechanical issues are recent |
| 80,000 - 180,000 | Engine/ABS Light | Reduced offer, depending on seriousness of faults shown |
| 180,000+ | Multiple warnings | Lowest offers due to wear, risk, and costly repairs |
When you submit your vehicle to Sell Your Damaged Car or any formal buyer, your odometer reading should match what appears on your SA registration documents and eNatis system. If there's a major difference (such as a replacement cluster), disclose it up front. This helps avoid administrative delays and protects you from liability after sale or deregistration.
Once your vehicle is collected, reputable buyers archive dashboard and odometer photos as part of the record for legal, auditing and anti-fraud purposes. This protects both parties if there's ever a dispute or if the vehicle is later re-registered or sold for salvage in the South African market.
