Learn how to compare offers from not-starting car buyers in South Africa. Practical steps, repair vs sell examples in R, and what to check in offers.
Compare Net Cash, Not Headlines
Ask buyers for net offers after towing and admin to make an apples-to-apples comparison.
Document the Fault
Use identical photos and a clear fault description when requesting multiple quotes.
Include Logistics & Paperwork
Prefer buyers who offer free towing, deregistration help and fast payment.
Owners of not-starting cars face a common dilemma: pay for repairs, try to sell privately, or accept a cash offer from a specialist buyer. The phrase not-starting-car-buyers-compare-prices signals a research stage - you want to know which buyer gives a fair, transparent offer and which one simply quotes a low salvage value. This guide focuses on South Africa, with practical examples in R, and explains how to compare prices from reputable buyers while accounting for towing, paperwork and deregistration.
Pro tip: When you ask multiple not-starting car buyers to compare prices, provide the same photos, odometer reading and honest fault description to get comparable offers.
| Scenario | Typical repair cost (estimate) | Value retained after repair (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Starter motor replacement (older hatch) | R3,000 - R7,000 | R4,000 - R10,000 |
| Engine rebuild (mid-size sedan) | R15,000 - R45,000 | R20,000 - R60,000 |
| Electrical fault diagnosis & repair | R1,500 - R8,000 | R2,000 - R9,000 |
Notes: figures are illustrative South Africa estimates and will vary by workshop, parts availability and vehicle condition. If the repair cost is a large share of the vehicle's market value, comparing not-starting-car-buyers-compare-prices may show selling is the more economical option.
If you want a quick route to offers from specialist buyers, our online valuation process simplifies comparisons: submit identical vehicle details to each buyer when you request offers. For information about selling a non-running vehicle, see the Sell Non-Running Car page and our How it works overview for process details.
Selling often makes sense when repair costs approach or exceed a large portion of the car's market value, when parts are scarce, or when you need immediate cash and want to avoid storage and towing fees. Specialist buyers who handle salvage, deregistration and free towing can make disposal straightforward for private owners and small business fleets in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and surrounding areas.
| Damage Type | Typical Offer Impact |
|---|---|
| Mechanical (not-starting due to starter/battery) | Moderate; buyers may deduct repair estimate or offer for parts/salvage. |
| Flood-damaged | Lower offers due to electrical and corrosion risk. |
| Accident structural damage | Offers depend on extent; salvage markets may pay more for repairable panels and components. |
To simplify comparisons, specialist services often provide immediate online offers and handle towing and admin. See the Sell Damaged Cars page for more on how damaged or non-running vehicles are assessed.
A reliable buyer will confirm the pickup time, arrange free towing, handle paperwork (including deregistration where applicable) and make payment according to the agreed terms. Verify the buyer's process and ask for confirmation of payment method and expected timing before collection is scheduled.
Scenario A - Private owner in Durban: a 2010 hatch that won't start after a failed alternator. The owner compares local workshops' repair quotes versus three specialist buyers. After matching the same photos and descriptions, they select the buyer offering free towing, paperwork handling and the best net cash offer.
Scenario B - Small fleet operator near Johannesburg: a non-running bakkie with a seized engine. The fleet manager compares offers with an eye to how quickly the buyer can collect and settle finance, favouring buyers who streamline admin to reduce downtime.
