What documents do I need to sell my damaged car?

You will normally need the vehicle registration certificate (logbook), your South African ID or passport, and proof of ownership. If the logbook is missing you can provide a sworn affidavit and Sell Your Damaged Car will guide you through replacement documentation.

My car still has a finance bond or outstanding loan - can you buy it?

Sell Your Damaged Car can purchase vehicles with outstanding finance, but the bond holder must be settled before ownership can transfer. We can obtain settlement figures and coordinate payment to the lender as part of the sale process.

How do you handle transfer of ownership and deregistration for non-running or written-off vehicles?

We prepare and submit the required transfer forms, collect the necessary signatures, and lodge paperwork with the relevant licensing authority (eNaTIS or municipal licensing office) to complete transfer and, where applicable, deregistration. You will receive written confirmation of the transfer and payment once the process is complete.

Are there tax or VAT obligations I should be aware of when selling my damaged car?

Private sellers are generally not required to charge VAT on a single private vehicle sale, but businesses or VAT-registered sellers must account for VAT. For income tax or capital gains considerations, consult a tax advisor for advice specific to your circumstances.

What happens if my car is part of an insurance claim or a police case?

If the vehicle is subject to an insurance claim or police investigation we will require written clearance from the insurer or police before transfer can proceed. Disclose any open claims or cases up-front so we can advise on the documents needed to lawfully complete the sale.

Limpopo Salvage Vehicle Documentation Guide - Paperwork & Next Steps

Overview: Limpopo salvage vehicle documentation explained

If your vehicle in Limpopo has been written off, flood- or fire-damaged, or is non-running, understanding Limpopo salvage vehicle documentation is the first step to converting the asset into cash or responsibly disposing of it. This guide walks through the required paperwork, how valuation and salvage records affect offers, and practical next steps for private owners and small fleets across Polokwane, Tzaneen, Thohoyandou and surrounding districts.

When to sell vs repair

Deciding whether to repair or sell a salvage vehicle depends on repair cost, remaining market value, safety, and insurance position. For many Limpopo owners, high repair estimates, extended downtime and logistics make selling a simpler option. Use repair estimates (obtainable from a trusted workshop) and compare to the vehicle's post-repair market value before committing to repairs.

Repair cost vs value retained

Scenario	Typical repair cost (estimate, R)	Estimated value retained after repair
Minor panel & paint work	R5,000 - R15,000	70%-90% of pre-accident value
Structural damage / chassis repair	R20,000 - R80,000+	40%-70% of pre-accident value
Flood or fire damage	R15,000 - R100,000+	Often significantly reduced; varies by extent

These figures are illustrative estimates for South Africa and will vary by vehicle age, make and local labour/parts costs in Limpopo. If repair cost approaches or exceeds expected retained value, selling as salvage is frequently the lower-risk choice.

Quick note: If the vehicle is under finance, speak to your lender before arranging sale or disposal - lender consent is commonly required for vehicles with outstanding balances.

How the process works with a buyer that handles documentation

A reputable buyer who understands Limpopo salvage vehicle documentation will streamline the steps: you upload vehicle details and photos, receive an offer, accept or decline, and the buyer arranges towing and paperwork. For an example of a streamlined online flow and what to expect, see our site overview at Sell Your Damaged Car (service overview).

Common documentation items prepared in Limpopo

Vehicle registration document (paper or eNatis printout)
Identification (ID book, smart ID card or passport) of the registered owner
Proof of address (utility bill or bank statement)
Letter of authority if selling on behalf of a company or another individual
Finance settlement letter if the vehicle is bonded
Written-off or salvage declaration documents if previously issued by insurer

If you want to understand how a specialist handles collection, paperwork and deregistration end-to-end, the company’s process page explains each step in plain language: About / How it works.

Legal & paperwork considerations in South Africa

In South Africa, transferring or disposing of a salvage vehicle follows specific rules under motor vehicle registration and insurance practices. Key points for Limpopo owners:

Only the registered owner can lawfully sign transfer or disposal documents unless authorised in writing.
Vehicles under finance require settlement or lender approval before transfer.
Deregistration and transfer must be recorded with the relevant licensing authority (eNatis/municipal licensing offices) to avoid future liability.
If an insurer has declared the vehicle a write-off, ensure all insurer paperwork is complete before sale.

Damage types vs typical offer impact

Damage type	Typical impact on salvage offers
Minor cosmetic (bumper, lights)	Lower reduction; parts easily reused or repaired
Structural / frame damage	Significant reduction; safety-critical repairs needed
Flood or extensive water ingress	Major reduction due to electronics, engine and corrosion risk
Fire damage	High reduction; many components may be unusable

Offers depend on vehicle age, demand for parts, and local salvage market conditions in South Africa. A clear photographic record and accurate description in your submission will help buyers provide a transparent, competitive cash offer.

Tips to maximise your documented offer in Limpopo

Photograph the vehicle from multiple angles, include close-ups of damage and the vehicle identification number (VIN).
Provide complete service history and any receipts for recent parts or work - these increase buyer confidence.
Declare finance status up front and include contact details for the lender where possible.
If the vehicle has a written-off insurer record, include insurer documentation to speed verification.

For owners of non-running vehicles, see the practical guidance on selling non-running cars to understand logistics and expected timelines: Sell Non-Running Car. If your vehicle is damage-related but still mobile, the Sell Damaged Cars page details steps specific to those conditions: Sell Damaged Cars.

What happens after collection

After you accept an offer and the vehicle is collected, a trustworthy buyer will complete transfer paperwork and, if agreed, assist with deregistration. Payment is typically released after documentation checks. Keep your own copies of transfer forms and confirmation of deregistration to avoid future disputes.

Practical examples (South Africa context)

Example: A private owner in Polokwane with a 2010 hatchback that suffered flood damage documents the VIN, interior photos and insurer write-off letter. Providing these items shortens verification and helps the buyer finalise settlement with the lender where a bond existed. All values used in the example would be actual figures provided by workshops or lenders and are not shown here as offers.
