Understand Pretoria's license disc renewal rules for damaged cars. Learn your legal responsibilities, when to renew vs deregister, and how to avoid penalties.
In Pretoria, even if your car is not roadworthy due to accident damage, mechanical failure, or being written off, you remain responsible for renewing the license disc until you officially deregister the vehicle. Failing to renew can result in backdated penalties, added costs, and complications with future vehicle transactions-including selling, deregistration, or scrapping. Understanding the local process, paperwork, and options as a Pretoria car owner is crucial, especially when dealing with a damaged or non-running vehicle.
For all of these, license renewal remains your legal responsibility until you formally notify the Traffic Department and complete deregistration or change-of-ownership procedures.
Deciding whether to renew your license disc or proceed with deregistration depends on your plans for the vehicle:
| Scenario | Renew License Disc? | Deregister Instead? |
|---|---|---|
| Car might be repaired & made roadworthy | Yes (keep renewal up to date) | No (until final decision) |
| Decided to sell as damaged or scrap | Only until transfer/deregistration | Yes (if vehicle will not return to road) |
| Permanently written off / unrepairable | No | Yes (ASAP) |
Until you complete an official deregistration, you remain liable for each license period and associated penalties.
License disc renewal in Pretoria follows the standard eNatis process, even for non-running or damaged vehicles. You can renew online or at your local licensing office. Required documents include:
If you've missed renewals, be prepared to pay arrears and penalties. For vehicles that haven't been driven or used due to damage, no exemption from renewal applies until you officially deregister the vehicle.
To stop ongoing license liability, you'll need to complete deregistration-often after a sale to a salvage or damaged car buyer, or if you intend to scrap the vehicle. You must:
Once your damaged car is sold (for example, to a specialist like Sell Your Damaged Car), the buyer will often assist with deregistration to ensure you are no longer liable for future license periods. When the deregistration is processed, license disc renewals are no longer required and you won't be billed for future periods.
If you don't complete ownership change or deregistration, annual renewal liability remains with you-even if the vehicle is inoperable or with a new owner. Tidy up your records as soon as possible after a claim, breakdown, or sale.
