Compare junkyard sale to a car buyer offering finance settlement. See how to safely sell your financed, damaged, or non-running car in South Africa, with all paperwork handled.
Facing a damaged or non-running car that's still under finance can feel overwhelming. Many South African car owners consider two main options: selling to a junkyard or working with a specialist car-buying service that offers finance settlement. Both paths have important differences, with implications for your paperwork, payout, and peace of mind. This guide will help you understand the pros, cons, and typical processes for each, so you can make an informed, low-risk decision.
Junkyards in South Africa primarily purchase vehicles for scrap or spares. If your car is accident damaged, non-running, or written off, you might receive an on-the-spot offer with immediate towing. However, junkyards rarely settle outstanding finance. This means you will remain liable for any remaining loan balance after sale, and must coordinate with your bank for settlement and deregistration.
A specialist service such as Sell Your Damaged Car handles not only the purchase, but also coordinates settlement of outstanding finance with your bank. This approach offers greater convenience and less legal risk, as all paperwork, owner transfer, and deregistration are professionally managed - crucial for owned-under-finance vehicles in South Africa.
| Aspect | Junkyard | Car Buyer with Finance Settlement |
|---|---|---|
| Accepts finance cars? | Rarely | Yes, coordinates settlement |
| Paperwork assistance | Limited | Full admin service, deregistration |
| Offer value | Usually low (scrap rates) | Based on market/salvage data |
| Towing/collection | Sometimes included, often at a fee | Always free, SA-wide |
| Risk/liability | You may still owe bank after sale | Settlement handled, low risk |
If your vehicle is still under finance (bank loan or lease), a reputable car buyer will:
For cars under finance in South Africa, ownership is only transferred once the outstanding loan is settled. Always:
Once your car is collected by a legitimate car buyer (with finance settlement):
| Damage Type | Junkyard Offer | Car Buyer with Finance Settlement |
|---|---|---|
| Light accident | Low | Moderate, depends on age/model |
| Major accident/written off | Scrap value | Salvage data + demand |
| Non-running mechanical | Parts only | Relevant if spares in demand |
| Flood/fire damage | Very low | Depends on extent and model |
Unlike junkyards, specialist car-buying services with finance settlement capability can safely, quickly, and legally take your damaged, non-running, or salvage vehicle off your hands - even if you still owe your bank. Free nationwide towing (Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and beyond), streamlined paperwork, and transparent legal processes mean less hassle and better peace of mind, especially for owners and small fleets. Always review your options and ensure all debts are properly cleared for a smooth handover.
