Step-by-step guidance for South African owners on selling salvage cars for parts: decide repair vs parts, prepare documentation, and understand deregistration and collection.
When to Choose Parts Sale
If repair costs exceed likely resale value, selling for parts is often the better option.
Two Main Routes
Dismantle and sell parts yourself or sell the whole salvage vehicle to a specialist buyer.
Key Legal Steps
Confirm ownership, settle finance, and ensure deregistration or transfer is documented.
Selling a salvage car for parts in South Africa requires a clear view of condition, local market demand and the admin around deregistration and transfer. This guide explains when dismantling for parts is appropriate, how to prepare a salvage vehicle, and what paperwork and legal considerations to expect in metros such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban as well as regional towns.
A salvage vehicle is typically one that has been written off by an insurer or damaged to the extent that repair isn’t commercially viable. Selling for parts means either dismantling the vehicle and selling individual components, or selling the whole vehicle to a specialist buyer who will strip and resell parts. The approach you choose depends on time, storage, technical ability and local demand for parts for your make and model.
Deciding whether to sell for parts or repair involves technical condition, repair cost, future reliability and whether the vehicle is under finance. Use the following checklist to evaluate:
| Scenario | Likely option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Repair cost > 70% of pre-accident value | Sell for parts or whole-salvage sale | Repair is rarely economical; parts may yield better return. |
| Minor cosmetic damage | Repair and sell or keep | Lower repair costs and retained resale value. |
| Non-running, but intact drivetrain | Sell to parts buyer or dismantle | Engine/transmission parts can be valuable in the salvage market. |
If you want a practical route to move a salvage vehicle quickly and avoid storage headaches, consider working with buyers who handle collection and paperwork. For details about selling damaged or non-running vehicles and the company process, see the Sell Damaged Cars and Sell Non-Running Car pages for examples of how a specialist buyer can simplify the process.
Different damage types influence what parts remain valuable. Below is a general guide showing typical impact on offers - individual quotes will vary with model, year and demand.
| Damage type | Parts most often salvageable | Typical impact on offers |
|---|---|---|
| Frontal collision | Doors, interior trim, gearbox (if intact), electrical modules | Moderate to high impact; engine or chassis damage lowers offers substantially. |
| Rear impact | Front-end components, suspension, electronics | Variable; salvage buyers pay more for intact drivetrains. |
| Flood damage | Metal body panels, some mechanical parts (if not corroded) | Usually significant negative impact due to corrosion risk. |
There are two common routes: dismantle and sell parts yourself, or sell the whole salvage vehicle to a specialist who will dismantle. Each route has trade-offs in time, effort and return.
For an example of a streamlined seller experience that includes nationwide collection and paperwork support, refer to the company overview at the About / How it works page and the site homepage Sell Your Damaged Car homepage to compare options.
Before selling a salvage car for parts, address title, deregistration and any finance or insurance encumbrances. If the vehicle is still financed, lenders typically must be notified and the finance account settled or transferred before ownership can be legally changed. Deregistration or transfer processes vary by province; records in the national motor vehicle registry should be updated to avoid future disputes.
Once a buyer collects the vehicle, expect a signed handover document and confirmation of payment or settlement of finance where applicable. If you sold parts directly, keep records of each sale. For whole-salvage sales, ensure the buyer confirms deregistration or transfer in writing to avoid future liabilities.
Practical example: many South African owners in Gauteng and the Western Cape choose specialist buyers to avoid storage and towing costs; national buyers commonly provide free collection and handle deregistration, which simplifies completion for private sellers and small fleets.
Note: information in this guide reflects common practice in South Africa and should be treated as general advice. Figures and market examples are illustrative; individual offers depend on vehicle data, condition and salvage demand.
