Learn when to repair or sell hail-damaged vehicles in South Africa, how offers are calculated, and practical steps to prepare your car for a fast, low-hassle sale.
Assess Damage Accurately
Document dents, glass issues and any water or structural signs with clear photos.
Sell vs Repair Decision
If repair costs approach 50% of market value, selling is often more practical.
Nationwide, Paperwork Help
Specialist buyers can offer free towing, paperwork assistance and fast payment.
Hail damage ranges from light dents and chipped paint to glass breakage and structural issues. This guide explains how to evaluate hail damage, when selling is the pragmatic choice, and how to prepare your vehicle for a transparent cash offer across South Africa.
Hailstorms are a seasonal risk in many parts of South Africa, including Gauteng, the Western Cape and the Highveld. Owners with dented roofs, bonnet and panels often face a choice: pay for repairs that may exceed the vehicle's market value, or sell to buyers who specialise in damaged vehicles. Sell Your Damaged Car purchases hail-affected vehicles in any condition and can assist with free towing, paperwork and fast payment nationwide.
Start by documenting damage with clear photos (multiple angles, close-ups and interior shots if water or glass damage is present). Note whether glass is cracked, whether dents are cosmetic, and whether mechanical components (engine, suspension) were affected by impact or debris. Accurate information speeds valuation and reduces back-and-forth during offers.
| Typical repair scope | Estimated repair cost (R) - typical range | Value retained after repair - typical |
|---|---|---|
| Minor dents & paint chips | R2,000 - R10,000 | 70%-90% of pre-damage market value |
| Multiple panels & respray | R10,000 - R45,000 | 40%-75% of pre-damage market value |
| Glass replacement, structural or water damage | R20,000 - R80,000+ | Often under 50% of pre-damage market value |
Note: the figures above are illustrative South Africa estimates. Exact repair quotes depend on vehicle make, model and local labour/parts costs. If repair costs approach or exceed 50% of the vehicle's pre-damage market value, many owners find selling is the more practical option - particularly for older cars or fleet vehicles.
Deciding whether to repair or sell comes down to cost, time and intended use. Consider these factors:
If you decide selling is right for you, getting a fair, transparent cash offer starts with accurate photos and honest descriptions. Learn more about selling damaged cars on our Sell Damaged Cars page and how our process works on the About / How it works page.
Example: a 2012 sedan in Johannesburg with multiple panel dents and two cracked windows. Pre-damage market value R75,000. Repair estimate R35,000 (respray + glass). Given repair cost equals ~47% of value and repairs take time, many owners opt to sell to a specialist who handles towing and paperwork.
A transparent sale process reduces uncertainty. Typical steps for selling hail-damaged vehicles to a specialised buyer are:
Sell Your Damaged Car’s online form makes step one easy; submit photos and details quickly on the homepage or the Sell Non-Running Car page if the vehicle is immobile.
| Damage type | Typical effect on offers | What buyers look for |
|---|---|---|
| Surface dents, paint chips | Lower impact; cosmetic repairs achievable | Extent of panel damage, rust risk |
| Glass breakage | Moderate impact; replaceable parts raise costs | Which windows, costs and availability |
| Structural or water ingress | High impact; reduces offers significantly | Extent of frame damage and long-term corrosion risk |
