Step-by-step guide for South African owners on selling a fire-damaged car to a scrapyard: assessment, paperwork, valuations and tips to maximise salvage value.
Assess Damage Clearly
Photos and VIN details speed fair offers and prevent disputes.
Check Paperwork & Finance
Resolve outstanding finance and get a signed transfer or deregistration.
Compare Scrapyards & Buyers
Multiple quotes and clear disclosure maximise your salvage value.
Selling a fire-damaged car to a scrapyard is a common option when repair costs far exceed the vehicle's residual value or when safety and insurance status make repair impractical. This guide explains how to assess your car after a fire, what scrapyards typically require, and South Africa-specific steps such as deregistration, finance checks and safe collection.
Do a basic assessment to give scrapyards accurate information: exterior burn extent, interior and wiring damage, engine bay condition, and whether the car is currently immobile. Take clear photos from multiple angles and note the vehicle identification number (VIN) and registration details. Accurate detail helps you get a realistic offer and avoids delays.
Important: If the fire followed an accident, record any police or insurance reference numbers. Some scrapyards and specialist buyers will ask whether the vehicle is written off or under an insurance claim.
| Scenario | Typical repair cost (R, estimate) | Typical value retained after repair (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Minor interior burn (cosmetic, no wiring damage) | R5,000-R20,000 | 60%-85% of pre-fire market value |
| Engine bay or wiring affected | R20,000-R80,000+ | 20%-50% of pre-fire market value |
| Severe structural & full electrical loss | Often exceeds vehicle market value | Scrap/salvage only |
These ranges are illustrative for South Africa and will vary by make, model and year. Use them only to judge whether repair is worth pursuing versus a scrapyard sale.
| Damage Type | How it affects offers |
|---|---|
| Superficial interior burn | Smaller reduction; parts resale possible |
| Wiring loom & electronics | Large reduction - costly to replace, lowers salvage value |
| Engine compartment fire | Significant reduction - often sold for scrap only |
| Structural/frame damage from heat | Very low offers; typically beyond repair |
If the car is non-running after the fire, consider specialist buyers in addition to scrapyards - they may value salvageable components higher. For more information on selling non-running vehicles, see Sell Non-Running Car.
Also review how damaged-vehicle sales typically work to set expectations; our how it works summary explains common steps and paperwork.
Follow these steps to reduce delays and ensure the sale is legal and straightforward in South Africa.
Obtain quotes from at least two scrapyards and consider offers from specialist salvage buyers. Scrapyards typically base offers on metal weight, component salvageability, and local scrap metal and part demand. For guidance on how specialist buyers operate and nationwide collection options, see Sell Damaged Cars.
Before transfer of ownership, ensure the buyer will handle deregistration or get a written agreement outlining responsibilities. If you intend to deregister the vehicle yourself, contact the relevant licensing authority and follow local procedures for cancelling registration. Scrapyards often assist with deregistration and will request a signed affidavit or clearance from the seller.
If there is outstanding finance, coordinate settlement with the lender. Many scrapyards will either pay the lender directly or ask the seller to settle first. Do not hand over the vehicle or sign transfer documents until finance issues are resolved or clearly documented in writing.
Ensure hazardous fluids and batteries are identified - reputable scrapyards follow environmental controls for fluid disposal and battery recycling. If the vehicle is in Gauteng, Cape Town, Durban or other metros, ask whether the scrapyard arranges collection or if you need to deliver the vehicle. Specialist buyers and services often provide free towing nationwide; check terms before agreeing.
A mid-2000s sedan with interior burn but intact engine might receive a higher salvage offer because many parts remain reusable. By contrast, a vehicle with engine fire and melted wiring looms typically attracts lower scrap-metal-based offers. Always disclose full damage detail to avoid re-negotiation or rejected collections.
Once the scrapyard takes the vehicle, ensure you receive a signed receipt and a written record of transfer or destruction. If the scrapyard handles deregistration, get a confirmation reference or document. Retain copies for at least 12 months in case of future queries from insurers or authorities.
In South Africa, administration such as deregistration, and dealing with outstanding finance or insurance claims can vary by province. If you want a streamlined online option that handles valuation, paperwork and nationwide collection, review national services on the homepage to compare how they manage towing and transfer.
Selling a fire-damaged car to a scrapyard can be the most practical route when safety, cost and administrative burden make repair impractical. Accurate information, clear documentation and choosing reputable buyers helps ensure a fair, lawful and efficient transaction in South Africa.
