Need to sell your accident-damaged car in South Africa? Get step-by-step guidance on paperwork, valuation, and a smooth, stress-free process with nationwide support.
If your vehicle has been involved in an accident-whether it's a recent fender-bender or more severe crash damage-deciding what to do next can be daunting. South African car owners often wonder whether to repair, salvage or sell accident-damaged vehicles. This guide explains how to sell an accident-damaged car in South Africa efficiently, highlighting trusted, practical ways to avoid costly pitfalls and unnecessary stress. We'll cover each step, from the online offer process to legal obligations, paperwork, and tips for getting a competitive cash offer.
The choice between repairing and selling is crucial after an accident. Factors like the severity of damage, vehicle age, and repair costs determine if selling is the better option. In many South African cities, accident repairs can exceed the car's market value-especially for older models, or those with structural, airbag, or electronics damage.
| Repair Type | Typical Cost (R) | Value Retained (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Minor bodywork (bumper, lights) | R2,000 - R8,000 | 80-95% |
| Major panel/structural | R15,000 - R40,000 | 50-70% |
| Airbag/electronic system | R10,000 - R30,000 | 40-65% |
| Damage Type | Common Outcome | Effect on Offer |
|---|---|---|
| Minor cosmetic | Scratches, dents | Small reduction |
| Structural/frame | Chassis damage, airbags deployed | Significant reduction |
| Non-running | Engine/gearbox failure after accident | Moderate to large reduction |
| Water/fire damage | Post-accident flooding/fire | Large reduction |
