Paperwork & Payment Help
We handle deregistration and settlement details for a smoother transfer.
If your vehicle has been in an accident, is a non-runner or has been written off, selling it for cash can be faster and more practical than repairing or advertising privately. This guide explains the practical steps, South Africa-specific paperwork and ways to get a competitive cash offer while avoiding common pitfalls. The primary keyword for this article - how to sell accident damaged car for cash - appears throughout to help you find the right next steps.
Sell Your Damaged Car buys vehicles in any condition, handles deregistration and collection, and provides free towing nationwide. For an overview of the company and process see the How it works page which explains timelines and paperwork.
Quick reality check: If repair costs are close to or exceed the car’s market value, many owners find selling for cash is simpler and lower risk than arranging repairs and resale.
Deciding whether to repair or sell an accident-damaged car depends on repair estimates, remaining market value, insurance position and personal convenience. Use the table below to compare typical repair cost ranges and the approximate value retained after repair in South African conditions. Figures are illustrative estimates for common passenger cars in SA (R = South African rand) and will vary by make, age and severity of damage.
| Repair cost (estimate) | Typical value retained after repair (estimate) | When selling for cash may be better |
|---|---|---|
| R5,000 - R15,000 | 70%-90% of pre-accident market value | Minor panel repairs - repair often viable if you intend to keep or sell privately. |
| R15,000 - R50,000 | 50%-75% of pre-accident market value | Moderate structural or mechanical work - selling for cash is worth comparing. |
| R50,000+ | 30%-60% of pre-accident market value | Major structural, flood or engine damage - selling as-is is often the practical option. |
These ranges reflect typical South African market behaviours and are estimates only. If the car is under finance, contact your lender first - some lenders allow settlement and transfer, while others require specific instructions. For more on selling non-runners see the Sell Non-Running Car information.
For a clear comparison of selling damaged cars and common buyer expectations, see the Sell Damaged Cars page for specific vehicle types we buy.
Selling an accident-damaged car for cash typically follows a straightforward flow: submit vehicle details and photos, receive a transparent offer, accept the offer, and arrange free collection and paperwork. Below is a practical sequence many South African sellers use.
This process minimises effort for owners in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and surrounding regions. For more detail on the company’s step process and timelines, visit the Sell Your Damaged Car homepage.
Key admin items to address when selling an accident-damaged car in SA include proof of ownership, the car’s registration document, any outstanding finance, and a completed transfer or deregistration form. If the vehicle is financed, the lender’s lien must usually be settled or a transfer arranged. Expect to provide ID and bank details for payment verification.
Sell Your Damaged Car handles paperwork, including deregistration and transfer where required, reducing delays. For obligations around accident reporting and evidence, consult official guidance and keep copies of any accident reports or insurer communications handy.
Different types of damage affect offers differently. The table below summarises common damage types and how they typically influence cash offers in South Africa (illustrative guidance).
| Damage type | Typical impact on offer | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Minor panel/bumper damage | Low to moderate impact | Often repairable; value retained depends on quality of repair. |
| Structural/frame damage | Significant impact | Affects safety and resale; buyers price this accordingly. |
| Engine/transmission failure | High impact | Non-running vehicles attract specialist buyers; see Sell Non-Running Car guidance. |
| Flood or fire damage | Very high impact | Often sold for parts or salvage; transparent disclosure is essential. |
After you accept an offer, the buyer arranges free towing, completes necessary forms and verifies documentation. Payment is released according to the agreed terms once collection and documentation checks are complete. Keep copies of transfer receipts and bank confirmations for your records. If the vehicle was under finance, ensure the lender has been settled and the account closed or transferred.
Selling an accident-damaged car for cash in South Africa is often the fastest way to recover value without the delays of repairs or private sales. Use transparent buyers who offer free nationwide towing, handle deregistration and provide clear, written offers. For more company-specific process steps, see the About / How it works page and the Sell Damaged Cars section for examples of what is accepted.
