Step-by-step guide to selling a written-off car in South Africa. Learn preparation, paperwork (deregistration, finance), and tips to get a competitive cash offer.
Understand Written-Off Status
A written-off car is often uneconomical to repair; selling avoids long repairs and storage costs.
Prepare & Document
Clear photos, logbook and service history speed valuations and support offers.
Legal Steps Covered
Buyers typically help with deregistration and finance settlement for a smoother sale.
A written-off car is one a vehicle insurer classifies as uneconomical to repair or unsafe to return to the road. Owners in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and other parts of South Africa often choose to sell written-off vehicles because repair costs, safety concerns and time can outweigh the benefits of restoring the car. Selling to a specialist buyer is an efficient option when you want to convert the vehicle into cash and avoid storage, repair coordination, or private-sale risks.
This guide is for private owners and small fleet operators with accident-written-off, salvage or non-repairable vehicles. It covers practical steps, legal tasks specific to South Africa (including deregistration and vehicles under finance), and ways to present your car to maximise a transparent, competitive cash offer.
Deciding whether to sell or repair a written-off vehicle depends on safety, repair cost, time and the vehicle's residual value. Repairs on a written-off car can be costly and carry regulatory or insurance complications. If a repair estimate is a large share of the car's market value, selling is often the more practical option.
| Scenario | Typical repair cost (estimate) | Value retained after repair (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Minor structural damage | R10,000 - R40,000 | 60%-80% of pre-accident value |
| Major structural or chassis damage | R40,000 - R150,000+ | 30%-60% of pre-accident value |
| Catastrophic (fire, severe flood) | Often uneconomical | Typically low resale value; sold for parts or salvage |
Estimates above are illustrative and vary by make, model, year and local labour rates. When repair costs approach or exceed the vehicle's market value (after repair), selling is usually the lower-cost, lower-risk route.
Selling a written-off car to a specialist buyer involves fewer steps than a private sale. The common stages are: prepare clear photos and documentation, get a valuation or offer, agree terms including towing and admin, complete paperwork and hand over the vehicle on collection. Specialist buyers typically handle towing and paperwork to simplify the transaction.
If you want to understand how specialists handle non-running vehicles, see our Sell Non-Running Car guidance for additional preparation tips.
Practical note: Free towing and paperwork handling are common inclusions from reputable buyers - this reduces delays, especially if the car is non-drivable or stored off-site.
To learn more about how specialist buyers operate and what to expect during collection, review our About / How it works page.
Selling a written-off car in South Africa requires attention to registration, deregistration and any finance encumbrances. If the vehicle is financed, the finance provider retains an interest; you must settle or obtain written consent before transfer. Reputable buyers often coordinate with finance houses and manage deregistration paperwork with local licensing authorities on your behalf.
| Damage Type | Common effect on offers |
|---|---|
| Cosmetic (panels, paint) | Smaller reduction if structural and mechanical sound |
| Structural/chassis | Significant reduction - affects safety and repairability |
| Flood or fire | Often large reduction; may be sold for parts/salvage |
| Mechanical failure (engine/transmission) | Varies by repair cost; driveline faults lower offers substantially |
If you want a clear process tailored to damaged vehicles, our Sell Damaged Cars page explains common inclusions such as free towing and admin handling.
After you accept an offer and the vehicle is collected, a reputable buyer will finalise transfer and deregistration paperwork and arrange payment. Payment timing may be immediate on collection or shortly after verification; ask for a clear timeline before accepting an offer. If the vehicle was under finance, proceeds normally settle the outstanding balance with the lender and any remainder is paid to you.
For a streamlined online quote and to understand turnaround times for collection and payment, visit our homepage. For scenarios where the car does not run or is in a remote location, our Sell Non-Running Car guidance outlines collection logistics.
