Step-by-step guide to selling damaged, non-running or written-off vehicles in South Africa. Learn when to sell, paperwork essentials, and tips to maximise your offer.
Decide Repair or Sell
Compare repair estimates with likely post-repair value to choose the best route.
Streamlined Selling Steps
Upload details, receive an offer, accept, and the buyer handles towing and paperwork.
SA-Specific Help
Nationwide collection, deregistration support and guidance for vehicles under finance.
Selling a damaged car in SA means balancing repair costs, current market value and the time you want to spend. Many owners choose to sell when repair bills, storage costs or legal exposure outweigh the expected value after repair. Specialist buyers purchase vehicles in any condition, handle paperwork and arrange collection - useful if your vehicle is non-running, accident-written-off or has major mechanical faults.
Deciding whether to repair or sell depends on several factors: repair estimate, remaining market value, insurance settlement possibilities and personal time. For small, insured repairs it often makes sense to repair. For heavy structural damage, flood damage, or when the vehicle is non-running, selling can be quicker and lower risk.
| Scenario | Typical repair cost (estimate) | Likely post-repair market value retained |
|---|---|---|
| Minor panel & paint | R3,000-R12,000 | 70%-90% of pre-damage value |
| Front-end mechanical/structural | R15,000-R60,000+ | 40%-70% of pre-damage value |
| Flood or fire damage | Varies widely - often uneconomical | Often classified as salvage/written-off |
These figures are illustrative estimates for South African conditions; actual costs depend on make, model, spare-part availability and labour rates in metros like Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. If repair costs approach or exceed the retained market value, selling is usually the practical option.
Specialist buyers streamline the sale so owners avoid arranging towing, negotiating with multiple buyers or handling complex paperwork. The standard steps are:
For an overview of the service model and what to expect from paperwork handling, see the About / How it works page. If the car doesn’t run, there are specialist routes described on the Sell Non-Running Car page.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offers |
|---|---|
| Minor cosmetic (dents, scratches) | Small reduction; repairable items improve offers. |
| Structural/frame damage | Significant reduction; may be classed as written-off. |
| Flood or fire | Often treated as salvage; specialist buyers handle these cases. |
| Non-running / mechanical failure | Lower offers for major engine/transmission faults, but still market activity. |
Specialist buyers factor in salvage demand for parts and scrap value. If you want a quick comparison to selling privately, check the Sell Damaged Cars page for common examples of accepted conditions and the process.
When you sell, paperwork can include the registration certificate, a written sale agreement, a signed portion of the registration documentation and, where relevant, deregistration or a transfer at the registering authority. If the vehicle is under finance, the outstanding balance must be disclosed and lender consent obtained or the debt settled as part of the sale.
A small Johannesburg fleet owner with a non-running bakkie has a repair estimate of R40,000 while the likely post-repair resale value is uncertain due to structural issues. Selling to a specialist saved time, eliminated towing coordination, and passed deregistration to the buyer. This illustrates how businesses and private owners often prioritise speed and certainty over uncertain repair investments.
After you accept an offer and collection is arranged, the buyer usually completes the sale paperwork on-site or shortly after collection, arranges deregistration or transfer, and releases payment. Many specialist services provide free nationwide towing, which removes logistical barriers whether you are in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg or a smaller town.
If you want to review the full online selling flow and examples of accepted conditions, the Sell Your Damaged Car homepage explains the simple upload-to-collection steps: Sell Your Damaged Car. For non-running vehicles specifically, see the Sell Non-Running Car details.
Selling a damaged car can free up cash, remove liabilities and avoid prolonged storage costs. Work with buyers who handle towing, paperwork (including deregistration where appropriate) and offer clear, written agreements. Always verify identity, payment method and request a written receipt when payment is made.
If you follow the steps above and use specialist buyers who provide free nationwide towing and paperwork support, selling a damaged vehicle in South Africa can be straightforward and much faster than a private sale or an uncertain repair project.
