If your car has been declared a write-off following an accident or severe damage, you are legally required to deregister it with your local licensing authority in South Africa. But what if you have lost the logbook (NaTIS registration certificate)? Many car owners face this situation, which adds a layer of uncertainty to an already stressful process. Here we outline the steps, rights and responsibilities when deregistering a car after a total-loss event-without the original logbook in hand.
Without the RC1, you'll have to apply for a duplicate registration certificate (logbook) before you can finalise the deregistration. Alternatively, you may be allowed to present a police affidavit explaining the loss, together with alternative proof of ownership.
