Learn how scrap value is calculated in South Africa, what affects offers, and step-by-step tips to get a transparent cash quote for damaged or non-running cars.
What determines scrap value
Metal weight, usable parts, transport and local demand determine offers.
How to get a fair estimate
Provide clear photos, honest condition details and compare buyers who include towing.
South Africa-specific steps
Handle finance, deregistration and choose nationwide collection to reduce costs.
If you’re searching "how-much-is-my-car-worth-for-scrap-in-south-africa" you want a realistic estimate for a damaged, non-running or written-off vehicle. Scrap value is the cash a buyer will pay for the vehicle's recyclable metal plus any usable parts. For most owners the final offer also reflects transport, paperwork, local demand for parts, and the buyer’s downstream costs. Sell Your Damaged Car buys vehicles in any condition nationwide, handles paperwork and provides free towing - factors that can improve your net outcome compared with selling to a local scrap yard.
A quick valuation combines vehicle specifics (make, model, year, mileage) with photos of damage and an indication of whether major components are intact. Use clear photos of the engine bay, undercarriage and areas of heavy damage. For a streamlined online process and a cash offer that includes free towing, consider starting on our main site: Sell Your Damaged Car where you can upload vehicle details and images.
| Repair cost vs value retained (illustrative) | Typical outcome (estimate) |
|---|---|
| Minor damage (cosmetic, R5,000-R15,000 repairs) | Likely to keep most retail value if repaired; scrap value is low - sale as a repairable vehicle is often better. |
| Major structural/airbag deployment (repair > R30,000) | Often sold as salvage/scrap - scrap offer depends on parts and metal weight. |
| Non-running or flooded vehicle | Higher parts salvage value for certain models; pure metal value may still be modest. Specialized buyers pay more. |
| Damage type | Typical effect on offer |
|---|---|
| Totalled by insurer (written-off) | Often sold for salvage; offers reflect usable parts and metal; documentation matters. |
| Engine intact, body damaged | Higher offers because engines/gearboxes have resale value beyond scrap metal. |
| Flood or fire damage | Fire often reduces parts value; flooded vehicles may still have valuable body and metal but electrical parts are compromised. |
Local note: offers vary by city. Transport and scrap market dynamics in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban differ - buyers pay more where parts demand or processing capacity is higher. For a simple online valuation and an offer that includes collection, try the "Sell Damaged Cars" or "Sell Non-Running Car" forms: Sell Damaged Cars and Sell Non-Running Car.
If the cost to repair approaches or exceeds the vehicle’s market value, scrapping is often the more practical option. However, if major components (engine, transmission) are intact and the model has strong parts demand, selling for parts or to a specialist dismantler can fetch more than the pure metal value. Private sale for repair can be profitable for in-demand models but requires time and effort; using a dealer who buys salvage can be faster and still return competitive cash.
For guidance on the overall process of selling a damaged or non-running vehicle - including paperwork and tips - review our explanation of how we work: About / How it works. This helps you compare whether scrap or repair-sale makes sense for your specific case.
1) Gather vehicle details: make, model, year, odometer reading, and a short history of the fault. 2) Photograph the vehicle: engine bay, dashboard (showing odometer), all sides and the main damage areas. 3) Note key components: is the engine turning, are airbags deployed, has the vehicle been flooded? 4) Request a written offer from a buyer who includes collection and paperwork - such offers reduce hidden costs and make comparisons fairer.
Estimate examples below are for illustration only; local market conditions and vehicle details will change the outcome. Values shown are broad South African estimates (R) and should not be taken as quotes.
Title and deregistration matter. If the vehicle is under finance, you must inform the financier before sale; proceeds may need to settle the balance. A buyer who handles deregistration and transfer reduces risk and admin. Sell Your Damaged Car offers to manage the paperwork (including deregistration) and free towing nationwide, which simplifies the sale process and helps ensure a clean transfer of ownership.
A reputable buyer will confirm paperwork, schedule collection, handle deregistration and release payment quickly. With nationwide services, you should expect free towing and paperwork handling across major metros and surrounding regions such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. For an easy start to this process, use the online valuation and upload flow on the Sell Your Damaged Car homepage: Sell Your Damaged Car.
Important: if your vehicle is under finance or registered in another name, settle outstanding finance and obtain owner permission before transferring. A buyer that manages deregistration can simplify this step.
