Learn what determines scrap value in South Africa: parts, metal, logistics, paperwork and practical tips for getting the best outcome when scrapping your car.
Factors That Affect Value
Parts, metal content, vehicle condition, and logistics determine scrap outcomes.
Paperwork & Finance Matters
Outstanding finance and deregistration affect net proceeds and transfer timing.
Reduce Costs with Service
Free towing and admin help from a reputable buyer simplifies the process.
When owners ask "how much do I get for scrapping my car" they are really asking two things: what value can be recovered from parts and metal, and what paperwork and costs will affect the net cash they receive. Scrapping typically means selling a vehicle that is uneconomical to repair to a recycler, dismantler or specialist buyer. Value is driven by salvageable parts, the weight and type of metal, and local demand in South Africa's salvage market.
Several variables influence the answer to "how much do I get for scrapping my car": condition of the vehicle, model and year, availability of reusable parts, presence of valuable components (engine, gearbox, catalytic converter), and current scrap-metal demand. Logistics such as towing and admin (deregistration or outstanding finance) also affect the final cash you receive.
A useful rule of thumb: if repair costs exceed a large portion of the vehicle's current market value, scrapping or selling for salvage becomes more sensible. Consider the cost of repairs, the time and effort of private sale, and whether the car is roadworthy after repairs. For many owners in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban the decision also depends on local parts availability and repair labour rates.
Scrapped vehicles are typically dismantled for usable parts or crushed and sold for metal. Buyers include dismantlers, salvage yards, recycling facilities and specialist purchasers. If you prefer a straightforward online buyer that handles collection and paperwork, see our explanation of the selling process on the About / How it works page for how service providers manage offers, collection and admin.
When calculating the likely cash from scrapping, factor in: towing or collection fees (unless included by the buyer), administrative steps like deregistration, any outstanding finance that must be settled, and the buyer's margin to cover dismantling and resale. Many sellers benefit from companies that include free towing and handle paperwork, reducing deductions and uncertainty.
If you want an alternative to scrapping, such as selling a non-running car for parts or repair, our guidance on Sell Non-Running Car explains options for vehicles that could still have resale value beyond scrap metal.
Typical steps when you decide to scrap: gather vehicle details and photos, share any ownership documents, receive an indicative appraisal from a buyer, accept an offer, arrange collection and complete paperwork. Reputable buyers often provide free towing and handle deregistration; these inclusions reduce hassle and improve net proceeds. For a clear comparison of selling damaged vehicles through a specialist buyer, review our Sell Damaged Cars guidance.
Before transfer, confirm ownership and whether any finance is outstanding. Vehicles under finance usually require settlement with the lender before clear transfer can occur. Deregistration or transfer of ownership must be addressed to avoid future liability; many buyers include deregistration assistance as part of their service. Keep identification and vehicle documents ready to speed up the process.
| Scenario | Typical outcome |
|---|---|
| Minor cosmetic damage | Repair usually adds most retained value; private sale often best. |
| Major structural or flood damage | High repair cost vs retained value; scrapping or selling to a salvage buyer is common. |
| Non-running mechanical failure | If parts are reusable, dismantlers may offer more than pure metal scrap value. |
| Damage type | Typical impact |
|---|---|
| Catalytic converter removed | Reduces buyer interest; catalytic converters are high-value components when present. |
| Flood damage | Often lowers value significantly due to corrosion and electrical faults. |
| Complete write-off after collision | Salvage buyers price for usable parts and metal; overall offer depends on model and parts demand. |
After the vehicle is collected, the buyer completes administrative checks, arranges transfer or deregistration and processes payment. Timelines vary - some buyers pay on collection confirmation, others on completion of documentation. Using a buyer that handles paperwork and offers free towing reduces your workload and helps ensure a smooth transfer. For a clear view of the end-to-end selling experience, see our overview on the homepage.
Regional differences (labour, parts demand and scrap-metal facilities) can affect offers in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and surrounding areas. If your vehicle is under finance, lenders often require settlement before ownership can transfer - disclose this early to speed the sale. Many reputable buyers operate nationwide and include free towing and deregistration assistance, which is especially useful for sellers outside major metros.
Note: The values and outcomes discussed are qualitative guidance. Actual scrap offers vary by buyer, condition and market demand. Use this guide to ask the right questions and compare buyers who offer free towing, paperwork assistance and nationwide collection.
