Follow this hail damage photo checklist for car sale in South Africa. Learn what photos buyers need, organisation tips, legal notes and repair vs sell guidance.
Complete Photo Checklist
Full-vehicle, roof, close-ups, VIN and odometer shots for clarity.
Prepare & Organise Files
Name images logically and include a short photo index for buyers.
SA Legal & Value Notes
Disclose finance, keep documents ready and compare repair vs sale.
When selling a car with hail damage, clear photos are essential. Good images help prospective buyers, insurers and professional buyers accurately assess condition, speed up offers and reduce follow-up questions. This hail damage photo checklist for car sale focuses on practical, South Africa-specific steps you can take to document damage cleanly and professionally.
Clean the vehicle if possible: remove loose debris, wash off dust and dry panels so dents and paint damage are visible. Photograph in daylight with diffuse light (early morning or late afternoon) to avoid harsh shadows. Where safe and legal, park on a neutral background (driveway, plain wall) so the damage is the focus.
Note for sellers in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban: If the vehicle is still legally on the road, ensure it is parked lawfully while photographing. For guidance on what we buy and how the process works, see our About / How it works page.
Aim for completeness: capture the overall vehicle condition and focused evidence of hail impact. Label files clearly (e.g., "rear_quarter_2026-03-01.jpg"). Keep photos factual and avoid heavy editing.
Save photos in a single folder and name them logically (date_location_panel.jpg). Compress large files only if necessary; maintain resolution so professional buyers or assessors can zoom without losing detail. For tips on selling damaged vehicles more broadly, review our Sell Damaged Cars page.
| Photo Type | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Full-vehicle shots | Show overall condition and context for damage locations |
| Close-up dents | Allow accurate assessment of dent severity and repair method |
| VIN & odometer | Confirm vehicle identity and mileage for valuation |
Deciding whether to repair hail damage before selling depends on repair cost versus likely value retained. Small dents on panels may be economical to fix, but widespread roof and bonnet damage can be costly. For many sellers in SA, especially with older vehicles or those already non-running, selling as-is is faster and lower risk. If you are unsure whether to repair, compare quotes from local panel beaters and factor in time, transport and potential VAT or labour costs.
The figures below are illustrative ranges to help decision-making. Actual costs vary by vehicle, panel material and local labour rates.
| Typical Repair | Estimated Cost (R) | Typical Value Retained |
|---|---|---|
| Paintless dent repair (1-3 small dents) | R300-R1,500 | Moderate improvement in offers |
| Multiple panel PDR (roof, bonnet) | R2,000-R8,000 | Partial recovery; may not cover labour costs |
| Panel replacement & repaint | R5,000-R25,000+ | Variable; best for newer vehicles |
When selling a damaged vehicle in South Africa, clear documentation helps. Ensure you have the vehicle registration papers, proof of ownership, and a detailed record of the damage (dates and photos). If the car is under finance, inform the lender - vehicles under finance require settlement or lender approval before transfer. For information on selling non-running vehicles, including paperwork handling, review our Sell Non-Running Car resource.
| Damage Type | Typical Impact on Offers |
|---|---|
| Surface dents (no paint damage) | Lower impact; often repairable with paintless dent repair |
| Cracked paint/clearcoat | Moderate impact; visible evidence that may need repainting |
| Glass damage (windscreen/windows) | Significant; affects roadworthiness and may require replacement |
| Structural or water ingress | High impact; buyers typically price conservatively |
A professional buyer will review your photos alongside vehicle details (make, model, year, mileage). Expect follow-up questions or a request for additional close-ups. If you proceed to sell, the buyer may handle collection, paperwork and payment. For an overview of the vehicle purchase process and how offers are handled, see our homepage overview: Sell Your Damaged Car.
