Learn how to request and compare multiple salvage car quotes in South Africa, what to check (towing, deregistration, finance) and tips to maximise your net offer.
Compare Like-for-Like
Use the same photos and details for all quotes to make fair comparisons.
Check Inclusions
Free towing and paperwork handling can be more valuable than headline price.
Know SA Rules
Confirm deregistration, finance settlements and proof of payment in writing.
If your vehicle has been written off, damaged in an accident, flooded or is non-running, obtaining multiple salvage car quotes helps you understand market value and choose a competitive cash offer. Getting several quotes reduces the chance of accepting a low or unclear offer and reveals differences in inclusions such as free towing, paperwork support and payment speed. This guide explains practical steps for South African owners to gather, compare and interpret multiple salvage quotes efficiently.
Deciding whether to repair or sell depends on repair cost, the vehicle's pre-damage market value and the time and risk involved. For many written-off or severely damaged cars, the salvage market is often the simpler route. If repair estimates approach or exceed 50-70% of the car's pre-accident value, getting multiple salvage quotes is usually the faster, lower-risk option.
| Scenario | Typical repair cost (estimate) | Value retained after repair (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Minor accident (cosmetic, R5k-R15k) | R5,000-R15,000 | 80-95% of pre-damage value |
| Moderate structural/engine work | R20,000-R60,000 | 50-75% of pre-damage value |
| Severe / written-off / flood or fire | Often exceeds market value (varies) | 10-50% of pre-damage value |
Estimates above are illustrative for South Africa and depend on make, model, age and local labour/parts costs. Use multiple quotes to see the range rather than a single data point.
Most reputable salvage buyers follow a similar process: you submit vehicle details and photos, they supply an offer, and if you accept they collect the vehicle and finalise paperwork. When requesting multiple salvage car quotes, use the same information for each buyer so comparisons are dependable.
Pro tip: Use the same photos and damage description when getting quotes to ensure apples-to-apples comparisons. Services such as Sell Non-Running Car and Sell Damaged Cars accept photos online and make fast comparisons easy.
| Damage type | Typical offer impact |
|---|---|
| Cosmetic panels & bumper | Minor reduction; repairable cost-effective |
| Structural / frame damage | Significant reduction; may be written-off |
| Flood / water damage | Major reduction - electrical risk; lower salvage demand |
| Engine / transmission failure | Offer varies by parts value and repair cost |
Collecting multiple salvage car quotes is especially useful in metros such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban where salvage demand and logistics differ; urban areas may yield higher offers for usable parts than remote locations.
When you contact salvage buyers, standardise the information: same photos, clear description of damage, accurate VIN/chassis number and disclosure of outstanding finance. Ask each buyer to confirm whether free towing and paperwork (including deregistration) are included - these add real value and simplify the sale.
For a reliable process, consider getting quotes from a mix of online buyers, specialist salvage yards and broker services. Use the company details and reviews to verify trustworthiness. To better understand how a fully-managed sale works, read our How it works explanation and compare with other offers.
In South Africa there are a few administrative steps to finalise a salvage sale. A reputable buyer will help with deregistration and the transfer of ownership paperwork. If the vehicle is under finance, the balance must be settled with the financier - buyers often coordinate payout figures to the lender. Keep records of all communications and get a written receipt when ownership changes.
If you want a fast online comparison instead of managing each contact, an established buyer that offers immediate online valuation simplifies the process because you can quickly see a competitive cash offer and what it includes - for example, free towing and admin handled nationwide.
Once you accept an offer and the buyer collects the vehicle, expect paperwork completion (transfer/deregistration) and payment. Reputable buyers will provide proof of collection and confirmation of payment. Keep the sale receipt and any deregistration paperwork for your records and to resolve any future questions.
Example scenario: A Cape Town owner with a flood-damaged compact requests three quotes. One buyer includes nationwide free towing and handles deregistration; another offers a slightly higher headline price but requires the seller to arrange transport. After comparing net value and admin burden, the seller chooses the quote with inclusive towing and paperwork handling. This illustrates why comparing inclusions matters as much as the headline amount.
By standardising information, asking about inclusions like free towing and paperwork, and comparing several offers across Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and beyond, you can make a well-informed decision when you get multiple salvage car quotes in South Africa.
