Practical fire-damaged car selling checklist for South African owners. Prepare photos, paperwork and safety steps to speed valuation and sale nationwide.
Document & Photo Checklist
Gather registration, VIN photos, odometer and clear damage images.
Understand Value Impact
Electrical and engine fires typically lower offers more than superficial burns.
Use a Full-Service Buyer
Choose buyers who offer free towing, paperwork handling and fast payment.
A fire-damaged car selling checklist helps owners organise the key steps and paperwork needed to sell a vehicle that has suffered fire damage. Whether the vehicle is partially burnt, engine-damaged, or a total write-off, clear photos, accurate descriptions and correct ownership documents speed up any online valuation and improve transparency for buyers and salvage specialists. Services that buy damaged vehicles nationwide - including free towing and paperwork assistance - reduce logistics and admin stress for sellers across Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and surrounding regions.
Use this short checklist to decide if selling is the practical option:
A completed checklist lets buyers and cash-for-cars services evaluate the vehicle quickly. Typical items to prepare include ownership documents, a clear damage description, mileage, service history (if available), and multiple photos. If you want professional assistance with valuation, choose firms that handle collection, deregistration and payment to simplify the process; read more about how the process works on the company overview page About / How it works.
Do not attempt to start or move a fire-damaged vehicle without a qualified tow service. Fuel and electrical system damage can present immediate hazards. Use a service that offers free nationwide towing to ensure safe collection.
| Repair category | Typical repair cost (estimate) | Value retained after repair (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Minor interior/firebark damage | R5,000-R25,000 (parts & labour) | 60-80% (depends on visible history) |
| Engine bay/electrical fire | R20,000-R120,000+ | 30-65% (varies widely by model) |
| Severe/full-vehicle loss | Often exceeds vehicle value | Salvage value only (20-40%) |
Notes: Figures are illustrative estimates for South Africa and will vary by make, model and year. Use them only as a decision aid; actual repair quotes should come from accredited workshops.
When you are ready to submit details online, collect the photos and documents above and consider using a specialist buyer that accepts vehicles in any condition - see the Sell Damaged Cars information for specifics on accepted conditions and documentation Sell Damaged Cars.
Most reputable buyers follow a consistent flow: you upload vehicle details and images; they provide an initial, transparent offer based on condition and salvage demand; you accept or decline; the buyer completes paperwork and arranges collection (often for free); and payment is released after vehicle transfer. This is designed to reduce time and uncertainty for sellers across major metros and smaller towns.
| Damage type | Likely impact on offer |
|---|---|
| Superficial interior burns | Moderate reduction; repairable parts raise value |
| Wiring/electrical harness damage | Significant reduction; labour-intensive repairs |
| Engine/gearbox fire exposure | Major reduction; often salvage-only offers |
| Structural/undercarriage heat damage | Large impact; safety concerns reduce marketability |
After collection, expect the buyer to complete transfer paperwork, handle deregistration where required, and process payment. If the vehicle is under finance, the payout may be coordinated with the finance house; ensure you receive and keep written confirmation that the debt has been settled. For clarity on non-running or extensively damaged vehicles and the online submission process, review the Sell Non-Running Car guidance on the site Sell Non-Running Car.
If you want to understand the buyer’s full service (valuation, towing, admin, payment), check the company homepage details for nationwide coverage and process transparency Sell Your Damaged Car. Choosing a buyer who provides free towing and handles deregistration reduces post-sale admin and local travel for sellers in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg and beyond.
Final note: This fire-damaged car selling checklist is intended as practical guidance for South African owners. Figures and ranges shown are estimates to help decision-making and should not be taken as formal quotes. For a formal offer and an exact process timeline, submit your vehicle details to a reputable buyer that specialises in damaged vehicles and offers nationwide collection and admin support.
