Answers to common questions about selling a scrap or written-off car in South Africa, including paperwork, finance, free towing and what affects offers.
Documents & Finance
Have registration, ID and disclose any finance before selling.
What Affects Offers
Structural, flood and non-running issues change valuations significantly.
Nationwide Process
Online valuation, free towing and paperwork help available across SA.
This FAQ explains practical steps, typical timelines and what affects offers when you're selling a scrap car in South Africa. Whether the vehicle is accident-written-off, flood damaged, fire damaged, non-running or simply uneconomic to repair, this guide helps you decide and prepares you for the process. We explain how free towing, paperwork (including deregistration) and national collection work for sellers across Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and surrounding areas.
Deciding whether to repair or sell depends on repair cost, the vehicle's market value, safety and how soon you need funds or space. If repair estimates approach or exceed a high percentage of the car’s market value, selling for scrap or salvage often makes more sense. Consider storage, spares demand and safety risks from structural damage.
| Scenario | Typical repair cost (estimate, R) | Value retained after repair |
|---|---|---|
| Minor bumper / panel damage | R3,000 - R15,000 | High (repairs usually add most value) |
| Major structural or airbag deployment | R20,000+ | Low (often written off) |
| Mechanical failure, non-running | R10,000 - R50,000+ | Varies (depends on parts demand) |
Quick note: repair estimates and retained value ranges are illustrative. South African resale and salvage demand (model, year, regional parts demand) change offers-get a tailored valuation for accuracy.
At minimum, sellers should have the vehicle registration document (logbook), a valid ID, proof of bank details for payment, and any service or accident reports you can provide. If the vehicle is under finance, inform your lender-clearance or settlement is often required before transfer. Services that buy scrap cars typically help with deregistration and paperwork to simplify transfer.
Yes, but you must disclose finance. Typical outcomes: the buyer pays the lender directly to settle outstanding debt, or you settle the finance before transfer. Selling while under finance can take slightly longer because of lender processes; reputable buyers will explain each step and support documentation.
For related guidance on selling non-running vehicles, see this resource: Sell Non-Running Car.
Most professional buyers follow a simple path: provide vehicle details and photos online, receive an obligation-free valuation, accept the offer, then the buyer collects the vehicle and finalises paperwork and payment. Free towing and assistance with deregistration are common inclusions for nationwide services in South Africa.
For an overview of how a dedicated buyer handles collections and admin, see this page: About / How it works. For a straightforward start, the homepage explains the online submission process: Sell Your Damaged Car.
Key legal considerations: transfer of ownership, deregistration (if required), disclosure of finance and correct completion of the registration certificate. Buyers who specialise in scrap vehicles commonly assist with deregistration and provide receipts and signed documentation that protect both parties. Keep copies of all transactions and notices for your records.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offer |
|---|---|
| Surface / panel damage | Moderate effect; easier to repair or sell parts. |
| Structural / chassis damage | Significant reduction; often classed as write-off. |
| Flood / water damage | Major impact; electronic and corrosion concerns. |
| Non-running (mechanical) | Varies widely-depends on part demand and repair cost. |
After collection, buyers typically complete ownership transfer, deregister the vehicle if requested and process your payment. Expect a handover receipt and confirmation of transfer. If the vehicle was under finance, the buyer or seller arranges settlement with the lender-retain proof that finance has been cleared.
