A Durban-focused checklist of documents and steps to sell a written-off car in South Africa. Learn what to prepare for transfer, deregistration and faster collection.
Essential Documents
Registration, owner ID, insurer write-off letter and any finance clearance.
Prepare Photos & VIN
Clear images of VIN, chassis, odometer and damage speed up valuations.
Agree Deregistration
Confirm who handles deregistration and retain signed sale paperwork.
If your vehicle has been declared a write-off after an accident, insurance settlement or severe damage, you still can sell it to buyers who handle salvage, repair or parts. Knowing which documents are required in Durban (and across South Africa) speeds up the sale, reduces risk and helps you comply with legal requirements. This guide lists the typical documents, explains why each matters, and points to South Africa-specific steps such as deregistration and transfer options.
Below are the standard documents buyers, towing agents and authorities typically request when a vehicle is written off. Gather originals and clear copies where possible.
Note: Processing and verification steps can vary by buyer. Preparing scanned copies and clear photos (VIN, chassis, engine bay, odometer and damage areas) speeds up valuation and collection.
| Repair cost range (R) | Typical impact on sale value | When selling may be preferable |
|---|---|---|
| Under R10,000 (minor) | Small reduction from market value | If owner can safely fund repair and restore roadworthiness |
| R10,000-R50,000 (moderate) | Significant reduction; may exceed residual value | Selling often preferable, especially for older cars |
| Over R50,000 (major) | Large value loss; often classed as salvage | Sell to specialist buyers or salvage yards |
Deciding whether to repair or sell depends on repair estimates, current market value and your circumstances. In Durban, labour and parts availability can affect repair time and cost. Consider selling when:
If you want to compare selling options or logistics to repair, see our Sell Damaged Cars page for examples of services that handle salvage vehicles and nationwide collection.
A streamlined sale of a written-off vehicle follows predictable steps. Preparing documents in advance shortens valuation time and helps avoid delays at collection.
For a practical overview of the end-to-end steps from submission to collection, visit our About / How it works page which explains common timelines and responsibilities.
South Africa’s vehicle registration and transfer rules require clear documentation when ownership changes. If a vehicle is written off, a buyer may request additional documents to confirm status and ensure no outstanding finance or criminal history exists. Key legal points to check:
| Damage type | Typical effect on offers | Documents that help |
|---|---|---|
| Structural/frame damage | Major reduction; often salvage-only | Accident report, workshop estimates, photos |
| Mechanical failure (non-running) | Moderate to major impact depending on severity | Service records, diagnostic reports, photos |
| Flood or fire damage | Severe impact; often written-off | Insurance letter, claim documents, photos |
After the buyer collects the written-off vehicle in Durban, expect the following sequence: paperwork is completed, any agreed payment is finalised, and the buyer arranges transport to a repairer, recycler or salvage yard. For vehicles with outstanding finance, the buyer often coordinates payment to the lender to clear the record before transfer. Always obtain written confirmation of payment and transfer of ownership where applicable.
If you want a practical starting point for selling a non-running or written-off vehicle, our Sell Non-Running Car and homepage explain the typical online submission and collection flow used by buyers operating nationwide.
A private owner in Durban with a written-off hatchback should prepare: the registration certificate, ID copy, the insurer's write-off letter, photos of VIN and damage, and any service records. If the vehicle has a finance bond, request a clearance letter from the lender before finalising a sale. These documents typically allow a buyer to confirm legal status and arrange free collection or deregistration.
Estimated costs and timelines mentioned in this guide are illustrative and based on typical South African scenarios; repair costs are shown as rounded ranges in R and will vary by vehicle age, parts availability in Durban and the severity of damage. When in doubt, request written estimates and lender statements to confirm the exact paperwork required for your sale.
