The short answer is: the vehicle registration certificate (VRC) is the preferred document when transferring or deregistering a car for scrap, but it is not always strictly required to complete a lawful sale to a licensed scrap buyer in South Africa. Buyers, dismantlers and authorised agents commonly ask for the VRC because it proves legal ownership and speeds up transfer or deregistration with the relevant traffic authorities.
A VRC (sometimes called the registration certificate or disc) shows the vehicle registration number, owner details and vehicle description. For scrapping or selling a written-off vehicle, the VRC provides clear evidence of ownership and reduces the administrative steps the seller and buyer must take with eNaTIS (the national vehicle registration system) and local license departments.
Missing or lost registration certificates are common for older, heavily damaged or non-running cars. In many cases a licensed scrap buyer can still purchase the vehicle if you provide alternative proof of ownership (ID and the latest vehicle licensing papers, old renewal notices or a sworn affidavit). Sellers should expect the buyer to assist with additional paperwork and to verify ownership with local authorities.
If you live in Johannesburg and your car was written off after an accident but the VRC is missing, a professional buyer will typically ask for your South African ID, a signed written sale agreement and may assist with a statutory declaration to confirm ownership. When a vehicle is scrapped, two key administrative items matter: transfer of ownership (sale agreement) and deregistration with the licensing authority. The buyer usually initiates deregistration to remove future liability (traffic fines, theft claims, etc.). If the VRC is available this is quicker; without it, the buyer will lodge additional documentation such as a sworn affidavit or proof of identity.
If the vehicle is still under finance the financier is listed against the registration and must be paid out or provide written consent to the sale. This commonly means the VRC and the loan account details are required to close the transaction. Always notify your finance house before committing to a scrap sale to avoid disputes.
