Learn how to deregister a car in South Africa after an accident or theft. Our guide explains differences, steps, paperwork, and tips for accident-damaged or stolen vehicles.
In South Africa, deregistering a car removes the vehicle from the eNaTIS (National Traffic Information System) register, officially ending your legal responsibility as the owner. This step is crucial if your car has been written off in an accident or declared stolen and unrecovered. Deregistration protects you from future licensing fees and liability, ensuring no penalties or fraudulent use are traced back to you.
If your car has been severely damaged-either due to a collision, flood, or fire-and is uneconomical or illegal to repair, the insurer or owner must deregister it as "permanently unfit for use." This written-off status is typically issued after an official damage assessment or claim process. Key requirements for accident-damaged cars:
Once submitted at your local licensing department, the vehicle will officially be removed from circulation and cannot be re-registered for road use.
Vehicle theft requires a different approach. If your car is stolen and not recovered, you must follow these steps to deregister:
Your car will be tagged as "stolen" on eNaTIS, effectively closing your liability for tolls, fines, and relicensing.
| Criteria | Accident / Written-Off | Stolen / Unrecovered |
|---|---|---|
| Report Needed | Assessor's/Written-Off Report | Police Case Number & Affidavit |
| Owner's ID Required | Yes | Yes |
| Registration Certificate Needed | Yes | Not always (if lost/stolen) |
| Form to Submit | RC1 + ADV/RVC | Deregistration (stolen option checked) |
| Processing Time | 1-4 weeks | 2-4 weeks |
| Roadworthy Required | No | No |
It is the registered owner's legal duty to ensure correct and timely deregistration after a car is written off or stolen. Failing to do so can result in ongoing license fees, municipal fines, or being mistakenly linked to the vehicle in cases of future incidents or fraud. In Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and other metros, authorities may issue penalties for late deregistration or paperwork discrepancies.
If your car is still under finance, you must get written authorisation from your bank before deregistration-as the financier is technically the legal owner. For insurance write-offs, your insurer often handles the paperwork and may require a signed power of attorney to complete the deregistration on your behalf.
After confirmation, your legal responsibility ends. You'll no longer be billed for licensing or required to notify authorities for annual renewals. Always verify your vehicle status on eNaTIS and retain proof in case of future disputes. Accident-damaged cars may enter the salvage market and can only be sold for parts or to a scrapyard; stolen cars remain on record as such permanently-even if later found.
