Learn how city, transport and local salvage demand change scrap and salvage offers across South Africa, plus practical tips for fair comparisons and paperwork considerations.
Location Matters
Local demand, transport and salvage hubs affect scrap offers.
Compare Net Offers
Always compare offers after towing and paperwork are included.
Check Paperwork
Deregistration and finance settlement reduce regional friction.
Scrap and salvage offers for damaged, non-running or written-off vehicles vary across South Africa. Key drivers include local demand for parts, proximity to dismantlers and scrap yards, transport and towing costs, and regional salvage market conditions. When comparing prices by location - for example Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban - expect differences driven largely by logistics and market depth rather than the car alone.
Practical note: For many sellers, the difference between locations is less about a single dollar figure and more about net value after towing and admin. A transparent buyer who provides free collection and handles paperwork can significantly reduce geographic disadvantage.
| Typical repair cost category | Likely value retained in resale | What affects this by location |
|---|---|---|
| Minor cosmetic repairs | Partial retention | Higher in areas with many private buyers and dealerships. |
| Major structural/engine repairs | Low retention | Often lower in remote regions due to higher transport and repair costs. |
| Non-running / Category damage | Minimal retention | Stronger salvage markets in metros can still offer competitive quotes for parts. |
| Damage type | Typical impact on offer | How location changes impact |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmetic (bumper, panels) | Moderate reduction | Less impact in cities where parts sell fast. |
| Mechanical failure (engine, gearbox) | Significant reduction | Higher variation across regions depending on specialist salvage buyers. |
| Flood or fire damage | High reduction | Metro salvage yards may still value parts; remote areas often see lower offers. |
When you compare local quotes, ensure each buyer’s offer includes any collection or towing fees and whether they handle paperwork such as deregistration. For a clear comparison, request the net amount after collection and admin are handled. For more on how our nationwide process works, see the About & How it works page.
If your car does not start or is immobile, location matters less when you work with buyers who provide free towing. Learn about options for non-running vehicles on our Sell Non-Running Car page.
Deciding whether to repair or sell depends on repair cost, time, and the local resale market. In major centres such as Johannesburg or Cape Town, repairing minor damage can return value quickly due to stronger demand. In smaller towns or rural areas, selling as-is to a salvage buyer who offers collection and admin support may be the more efficient route.
Selling a damaged vehicle in South Africa requires correct ownership transfer and, where applicable, settlement of any outstanding finance. Sellers should verify that the buyer will handle deregistration with eNaTIS or provide clear instructions. If the vehicle is still under finance, inform the finance institution - a buyer that offers to liaise with the lender can simplify the sale. See our practical overview on Sell Damaged Cars for more context.
After the buyer collects your car, they typically complete transfer paperwork, settle any outstanding finance as agreed, and process payment. Timing can vary by buyer, but working with a service that provides clear timelines and transparent proof of payment reduces location-related uncertainty.
A seller in a Cape Town suburb may receive competitive offers because of nearby salvage yards and a steady market for parts. Conversely, sellers in a remote Eastern Cape town might find fewer local buyers and lower offers unless collection is included. For many owners in metros and smaller centres alike, a buyer who offers nationwide free towing and handles paperwork levels the playing field - see our homepage for an example of a nationwide approach.
