Learn how to compare scrap car prices in Gauteng, what affects offers, and practical tips for getting the best net value including towing and paperwork considerations.
Compare Total Net Value
Evaluate offers after towing and paperwork, not just the headline price.
Know Damage Impact
Structural and flood damage typically reduce offers more than cosmetic faults.
Prioritise Trusted Buyers
Choose buyers who offer free collection, deregistration support and fast payment.
If you’re searching for how to compare scrap car prices in Gauteng, you’re likely weighing whether to sell a damaged, written-off or non-running vehicle. Prices vary across Johannesburg, Pretoria and the wider Gauteng province because of factors such as vehicle make and model, the type and extent of damage, parts demand, local salvage yard rates and transport costs. This guide explains the main price drivers, offers a simple comparison framework and shows South Africa-specific considerations when you sell a scrap vehicle.
Scrap car prices in Gauteng can differ between salvage buyers in inner-city Johannesburg, industrial areas around Germiston and suburban yards near Tshwane. Proximity to dismantlers, parts demand for popular models (e.g., Polo, Polo Vivo, Toyota Hilux), and the availability of towing all impact the offer you receive. Transport and collection logistics matter - free nationwide towing reduces the effective cost to you and often improves the net cash you take home.
When comparing offers across buyers, look beyond the headline amount. A quote that includes free towing and paperwork handling (deregistration, settlement letters where needed) can be worth significantly more than a higher cash quote that leaves you to arrange collection. For context on a streamlined service model, see our company overview at About / How it works.
| Typical repair scope (estimate) | Potential owner cost (R, range, estimate) | Likely impact on resale value |
|---|---|---|
| Minor cosmetic (bumper, lights, panels) | R3 000 - R12 000 | Moderate - may improve private sale prospects |
| Mechanical repairs (engine/gearbox work) | R8 000 - R45 000 | High cost; value recovered often less than repair cost |
| Structural/frame damage | R15 000 - R70 000+ | Major loss in market value; often better to sell as salvage |
Note: cost ranges above are illustrative estimates in South African rand (R) to help decision-making. Actual repair quotes vary by workshop and parts availability.
For owners of non-running vehicles, consider our dedicated guidance on selling non-running cars at Sell Non-Running Car, which explains how removal and paperwork can change net offers.
Deciding whether to repair or sell for scrap depends on repair cost, your tolerance for hassle, and the local demand for parts. If the estimated repair exceeds a sizable portion of the vehicle’s market value, or requires complex structural work, selling to a reputable salvage buyer in Gauteng is often the lower-risk route. Fleet owners in Pretoria and Johannesburg sometimes choose to liquidate older, damaged units quickly to avoid downtime and towing logistics.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offers |
|---|---|
| Cosmetic damage (panels, paint) | Small to moderate reduction; parts may still have good value |
| Mechanical failure (engine/gearbox) | Significant reduction unless parts are in demand |
| Water/flood damage | Major impact; electrical components often written off |
| Structural/frame damage | Largest reduction; usually sold for parts/scrap |
A straightforward transaction typically follows these steps: submit vehicle details and photos; receive comparative quotes; accept the preferred offer; arrange collection (look for free towing in Gauteng to reduce hassle); complete paperwork including a written transfer of ownership or deregistration; and receive payment. For a full outline of a streamlined selling process, review our homepage process summary at Sell Your Damaged Car.
Ensure a clear written receipt and transfer of ownership to avoid future liability. If the vehicle is under finance, inform the buyer; many professional salvage buyers will liaise with the finance house to settle outstanding balances before transfer. Deregistration processes vary - for practical steps on documentation, see our Sell Damaged Cars guidance at Sell Damaged Cars. In Gauteng metropolitan areas, buyers often handle municipal or licence-related admin as part of the service.
Comparing scrap car prices in Gauteng is about assessing net returns, logistics and administration rather than only the headline figure. Use clear photos, request full offer breakdowns, and prioritise buyers who include free towing and paperwork handling to minimise unexpected costs.
