Learn how to compare salvage car offers in Gauteng, what affects valuations, paperwork requirements in SA and practical tips to maximise your cash offer.

Use Multiple Offers
Get several quotes and compare inclusions and timelines.
If your vehicle is written off, badly damaged, flood- or fire-affected, or non-running, comparing salvage offers across Gauteng helps you make an informed decision. The market varies between Johannesburg, Pretoria and surrounding towns: tow costs, buyer demand for parts, and repair prospects all influence offers. This guide explains how to compare salvage car offers in Gauteng and what to watch for when accepting a cash offer.
Buyers base salvage offers on four main factors: the vehicle's pre-accident market value, the extent of damage, immediate salvage demand (parts or scrap), and logistics (collection and paperwork). Two buyers may quote differently because one specialises in parts for that model while another focuses on whole-vehicle salvage or export.
In Gauteng, closer proximity to major breakers yards around Johannesburg and Germiston can raise offers slightly compared with remote locations due to lower towing times. However, transparent offers that include free towing and paperwork handling often reduce seller risk and hidden costs.
Practical tip: When you compare salvage offers in Gauteng, request the full breakdown: vehicle valuation basis, towing inclusion, paperwork support (deregistration) and payment timing.
Deciding whether to repair or sell a salvage vehicle depends on repair cost relative to remaining market value, insurance status and personal circumstances. If repair estimates approach or exceed the post-repair market value, selling to a salvage buyer is often the more economical option.
| Scenario | Typical repair cost (R, estimate) | Approx. value retained after repair (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Minor structural + panel work | R10,000 - R30,000 | 70-85% |
| Moderate structural damage | R30,000 - R80,000 | 50-70% |
| Severe frame/flood/fire damage | R80,000+ | <50% |
These ranges are illustrative and vary by make, model year and mileage. For many vehicles in Gauteng, a competitive salvage offer that includes free towing and admin may be preferable to uncertain repair investments.
Most reputable salvage buyers follow a similar process: you provide vehicle details and photos, receive an offer, accept or decline, and then the buyer arranges collection and paperwork. When you compare salvage car offers in Gauteng, prioritise transparency on timelines, towing inclusion and payment release.
For a practical starting point in comparing offers you can visit our service pages for more detail about what buyers include, such as free towing and paperwork handling: Sell Damaged Cars and our main site overview at Sell Your Damaged Car homepage.
When selling a salvage vehicle in Gauteng you must ensure legal transfer and deregistration steps are clear. A trustworthy buyer will assist with the required documents, verify identity, and complete transfer of ownership or issue a dismantling certificate if applicable. Vehicles under finance require lender clearance - offers should specify whether the buyer can settle the finance or if you must obtain a payout figure.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offers |
|---|---|
| Minor panel & bumper | Small reduction; good parts demand |
| Structural/frame damage | Larger reduction; often sold for parts or scrap |
| Flood or fire damage | Significant reduction; many buyers avoid road restoration |
| Non-running (mechanical failure) | Offer depends on salvageable components and brand demand |
After collection, the buyer should complete transfer paperwork or arrange deregistration. Payment timing varies by buyer; many reputable services release payment once collection and identity verification are complete. If your vehicle is under finance, ensure the payoff is settled and you receive written confirmation of a cleared account.
If you want guidance tailored to non-running vehicles, review our specific resource on selling vehicles that won’t start: Sell Non-Running Car. For a deeper look at our process and handling of paperwork, see our about page: About / How it works.
Comparing salvage car offers in Gauteng is about more than headline price. Consider towing, paperwork, finance handling and buyer reputation. Use clear photos, get itemised offers, and prioritise buyers who explain legal steps and payment timing.
