Step-by-step guide to compare salvage car offers from multiple buyers in South Africa. Learn what to check: net cash, towing, paperwork, finance and timelines.
Compare Net Proceeds
Look beyond headline offers to what you actually receive after fees and payouts.
Check Towing & Paperwork
Free nationwide towing and deregistration handling increase practical offer value.
Standardise Your Quotes
Provide the same photos and details to each buyer for a fair comparison.
When you receive several salvage offers for a damaged or written-off vehicle, the highest headline number is rarely the full story. Comparing salvage car offers from multiple buyers means checking what each offer includes, how they value the vehicle, and what costs or risks remain for you. In South Africa, factors such as free towing, handling of deregistration, whether your vehicle is under finance, and how quickly you receive payment can change the practical value of each offer.
Practical note: When you compare salvage car offers from multiple buyers, standardise each quote to a net value you will receive after fees, towing and paperwork. That net number is the best apples-to-apples comparator.
Deciding whether to repair or sell a salvage vehicle depends on repair cost, the vehicle's market value after repair, time, and legal requirements. If repair estimates exceed a significant portion of the car's post-repair market value, selling as salvage is often the more economical option. Use repair estimates from qualified South African repair shops and compare those to the offers you receive from buyers.
| Scenario | Typical outcome |
|---|---|
| Minor repairs (R5k-R20k estimate) | Often economical to repair if post-repair value exceeds total costs plus inconvenience. |
| Moderate damage (R20k-R60k estimate) | Compare multiple salvage offers; repairs may not deliver proportional value retention. |
| Extensive damage (R60k+ estimate) | Selling as salvage is commonly the clearer option; salvage buyers factor in dismantling and parts resale. |
Understanding each buyer's workflow helps when you compare salvage car offers from multiple buyers. Typical steps include a photo-based valuation, a conditional or firm offer, scheduling collection (often free towing for nationwide buyers), inspection on collection, final payment and paperwork handling. Ask each buyer to outline their exact steps and timelines so you can compare not just price but certainty and speed.
For more detail on our standard workflow and what we include when buying non-running vehicles, see our About / How it works page. If your car does not run, review guidance on selling non-running vehicles at Sell Non-Running Car.
When you compare salvage car offers from multiple buyers, confirm who is responsible for the statutory paperwork: deregistration, settlement of any outstanding finance, and transfer-of-ownership documentation. In South Africa, selling a car under finance typically requires coordination with the finance house; some buyers will pay out the finance directly and handle the balance, while others expect the seller to clear finance before transfer. Always request a clear explanation in writing.
| Damage Type | Typical impact on offers |
|---|---|
| Front or structural damage | Significant reduction; buyers factor in insurance write-off classification and repair complexity. |
| Engine/transmission failure | Reduces offers but can retain value for parts or rebuild markets. |
| Flood or fire damage | Strong negative impact; many buyers price aggressively low due to corrosion or insurance stigma. |
Once you accept an offer from a buyer, expect a formal confirmation that includes collection details, what documents to provide (ID, original vehicle registration certificate, proof of bank details), and a statement about how finance will be handled if relevant. Reputable buyers will schedule collection across major metros and surrounding areas such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban; confirm whether they provide nationwide towing and who signs the final transfer documents.
For practical tips on selling damaged vehicles and examples of what information buyers typically need, see our Sell Damaged Cars page and the site homepage at Sell Your Damaged Car.
